Electrical Manager
Role Overview:
The Electrical Manager will play a critical role in the design, development, construction, and commissioning of state-of-the-art hyperscale data centers across Asia. This position requires an experienced electrical engineering professional with deep expertise in mission-critical power systems, capable of leading complex projects from concept to operational handover. The successful candidate will ensure the highest standards of reliability, efficiency, and compliance for all electrical infrastructure, contributing directly to our client's expanding portfolio of world-class digital facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Electrical Design & Engineering Leadership: Oversee and review the electrical design for hyperscale data center projects, ensuring robust, scalable, and fault-tolerant power distribution systems (e.g., HV/MV substations, utility incoming feeds, redundant UPS systems, generator farms, switchgear, PDU/RPP, grounding). Review and approve electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, and construction drawings.
- Project Management (Electrical Scope): Lead the electrical scope of work for new data center builds, expansions, and upgrades from concept to commissioning. Manage project timelines, budgets, resources, and quality for all electrical installations, ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery.
- Construction Oversight & Quality Assurance: Provide expert technical guidance and oversight during the construction and installation phases of critical electrical infrastructure, ensuring strict adherence to design specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations across diverse sites in Asia.
- Commissioning & Testing: Develop and execute comprehensive electrical commissioning plans (Level 1-5, integrated systems testing - IST) for new facilities, including functional performance testing of generators, UPS units, switchgear, and control systems to validate system reliability and redundancy.
- Vendor & Contractor Management: Manage relationships with electrical consultants, equipment suppliers, and contractors. Review bids, negotiate contracts, and monitor performance to ensure deliverables meet project requirements and industry best practices for mission-critical environments.
- Operational Support & Handover: Collaborate with operations teams to provide electrical subject matter expertise for ongoing maintenance strategies, troubleshooting, incident response, and continuous improvement initiatives for live data center environments. Facilitate smooth handover of electrical systems to operations.
- Standards & Compliance: Ensure all electrical designs and installations comply with relevant international standards (e.g., Uptime Institute Tier standards, ASHRAE, NFPA 70/NEC, IEC, IEEE), local electrical codes, and environmental regulations across various Asian jurisdictions.
- Risk Management & Reliability: Identify and mitigate electrical system risks, implement preventative measures, and develop emergency response protocols to maintain high availability and minimize downtime in critical data center operations.
- Innovation & Efficiency: Research and evaluate new electrical technologies, energy-efficient solutions, and sustainable power strategies to optimize data center performance, reduce operational costs, and support green initiatives.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship: Mentor and develop junior electrical engineers and technical staff, fostering a culture of safety, excellence, and continuous learning within the electrical engineering team.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
- Experience: Minimum of 8-12 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, with a significant portion dedicated to the design, construction, commissioning, and/or operations of mission-critical facilities, preferably hyperscale data centers.
- Domain Knowledge:
- Deep expertise in high-voltage (HV), medium-voltage (MV), and low-voltage (LV) power distribution systems.
- Proven experience with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, standby generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), switchgear, transformers, and protective relaying.
- Strong understanding of data center specific electrical architectures (e.g., 2N, N+1 redundancy, distributed redundant systems) and their implications for availability.
- Familiarity with critical power path design, grounding, and lightning protection systems relevant to large-scale infrastructure.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) and power system analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM PowerTools) for fault studies, load flow, and coordination.
- Experience with project management software and methodologies.
- Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent international certification is highly preferred. Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Designer (ATD) or Accredited Operations Specialist (AOS) certification is a significant advantage.
- Standards: In-depth knowledge of international electrical codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 70/NEC, IEC, IEEE, TIA-942) and data center specific guidelines (e.g., Uptime Institute Tier Standards).
- Project Lifecycle Experience: Demonstrated experience managing electrical projects through the entire lifecycle, from conceptual design and detailed engineering to construction, commissioning, and handover.
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams, external vendors, and clients across diverse cultural backgrounds in Asia.
- Travel: Willingness to travel frequently across Asia to various data center project sites as required.
