Senior Industrial Automation Engineer
Job Description:
Our client is seeking a highly skilled Senior Industrial Automation Engineer to lead the design, development, and delivery of complex industrial automation projects.
This role drives technical excellence, strategic process optimization, and team capability development across diverse industrial sectors. The incumbent will be responsible for full lifecycle project delivery, from system design to commissioning, while ensuring compliance, innovation, and efficiency in alignment with the clients strategic objectives.
This position also includes mentorship of engineers, governance of software management of change, and direct contribution to presales and strategic initiatives within the business unit.
Key Responsibilities
- System Design: Develop complete automation system architectures including PLCs/DCS, SCADA, and field instrumentation to optimize industrial processes. Thoroughly analyse project requirements and design effective automation solutions.
- Programming: Engineer high-quality control logic, HMI/SCADA interfaces, and communication networks using Siemens (PCS7, TIA Portal) or equivalent platforms.
- Integration & Commissioning: Oversee the seamless integration of field devices, drives, and instrumentation, including FAT/SAT execution and commissioning activities. Confirm that all system hardware and software are properly configured, interconnected, and aligned with the approved project design specifications. Work closely with site personnel and contractors to guarantee installations are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project standards. Lead and execute comprehensive signal verification, loop testing, and acceptance testing of automation systems prior to commissioning. Validate that all I/O signals, interlocks, and safety systems operate as intended. Record and resolve any discrepancies, securing client approval and readiness for final handover.
- Strategic System Optimization: Lead process improvement and energy-efficiency initiatives aligned with company and client KPIs.
- Software Management of Change (MOC): Enforce controlled and documented automation software changes.
- Compliance & Safety: Implement risk assessments and safety standards in accordance with ISO and industry regulations.
- Project Governance: Oversee assigned projects to ensure delivery within our clients project management framework.
- KPI Leadership: Monitor and achieve performance metrics including billable utilization, customer satisfaction, and skill development.
- Mentorship: Guide and develop Industrial Automation Engineers through structured mentorship programs.
- Client Engagement: Support presales and proposal teams with technical expertise, project scoping, and estimation.
- Standby Duty: Participate in a rotational standby schedule as required by operations. Be available after hours, on weekends, and public holidays for urgent support or emergencies.

- Billable Hours Utilization: Percentage of total hours billed vs. available hours.
- Customer Satisfaction (CSAT): Average client feedback score per project.
- Skill Growth Achievement Rate: Percentage of professional development targets achieved.
- Total Hours Saved: Time saved versus project estimates through efficiency improvements.
Qualifications
- B.Eng / BTech in Electrical, Electronic, or Mechatronic Engineering
- ECSA registration or eligibility advantageous
- Siemens TIA Portal and/or PCS 7 certification preferred
- Valid drivers license and willingness to travel
Experience
- Minimum 7+ years experience in industrial automation
- Proven Siemens or equivalent platform experience (PLC/SCADA/DCS)
- Demonstrated leadership or mentorship of engineering teams
- Exposure to multi-sector industrial projects (FMCG, Mining, Water, etc)

Technical Skills
- PLC Programming (Siemens TIA Portal, Step 7, PCS7, Rockwell, Schneider)
- SCADA/HMI Development (WinCC, Ignition, Aveva)
- Industrial Networking (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus)
- Functional Safety (SIL-rated system design)
- Process Documentation and ISO project processes
- Variable Speed Drives (VSD) and Soft Starter applications – approximately 1 year of applied experience in setup, tuning, and commissioning.
- Demonstrable understanding of system architecture and configuration principles, with preference given
- to applicants who can articulate the detailed breakdown and interconnection of Siemens automation systems.
- Solid knowledge of industrial network protocols (Profinet, Profibus, Modbus, and Ethernet-based communication).
- Proficiency in CAD software (basic to advanced level) for system design, panel layouts, and wiring schematics.
- Proven experience executing Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with clients, commissioning activities, and final site handovers.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite of Products
