Junior Network Engineer
Job Description:
We are an innovative, vertically integrated connectivity service provider delivering high-speed fibre internet to residents of large residential buildings and multi-dwelling units in major metropolitan cities across South Africa. We are seeking a Junior Network Engineer/Technician to join our team, working under the guidance of our two senior engineers, Chris and Kyle, based in Rise. This role is designed to handle day-to-day network support tickets, with a focus on after-hours and weekend support. The ideal candidate is bright, motivated, and eager to learn, with potential for growth into a more senior network position over time.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle and resolve day-to-day network support tickets, particularly during after-hours and weekend shifts.
- Assist in configuring and maintaining network equipment, including routers, switches, and wireless devices, under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Troubleshoot basic network issues, escalating complex problems to senior engineers when necessary.
- Monitor network performance and report anomalies to the team.
- Provide excellent customer service and communicate effectively with clients and internal teams.
- Document ticket resolutions and maintain accurate records of network activities.
- Participate in training sessions with senior engineers to develop skills in network design, implementation, and maintenance.
- Stay available and responsive during assigned working hours to ensure seamless support.
Working Hours
- Weekdays: 3 days per week, 2:00 PM 10:00 PM
- Weekends: Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 AM 3:00 PM.
- Flexible arrangement with some office time required but primarily remote as long as availability is maintained during assigned hours.
Qualifications
- Basic experience in networking (e.g., familiarity with routers, switches, or wireless systems).
- Computer literacy and comfort with technical tools and software.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with team members and clients.
- Eagerness to learn and grow under the mentorship of senior engineers.
- High school diploma or equivalent; a relevant diploma or certification in IT or networking is a plus but not required.
- Valid drivers license and reliable transportation may be required for occasional on-site visits.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with Mikrotik equipment or other networking hardware (e.g., Cisco, Ubiquiti).
- Basic understanding of networking protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
- Experience with customer service or helpdesk environments.
- Interest in pursuing certifications such as Mikrotik Certified Network Associate (MTCNA) in the future.
