Job Title: Mason - Egypt

Department: Operations AAA Works

Contract Type: Permanent

Job Purpose: The role supports the Works Foreman in the execution of

maintenance and conservation works within the Commissions

cemeteries.

The main task is of an operational type and consists in performing

manual maintenance on buildings, structures and headstones for

the restoration and conservation of sites according to the CWGC

standards; together with small administrative tasks closely related

to the position

Location: Egypt

Working hours: Sunday to Wednesday from 07.00 to 16.30

Thursday from 07.00 to 16.00

1 hour Lunch break

42 hours net per week

Travel: You will travel within Egypt to ensure additional projects are

carried out. Potential for travel outside of Egypt as when required.

BACKGROUND

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) honours and cares for the men and women of

the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars, ensuring they will never be

forgotten. Funded by six Member Governments, our work began with building, and now maintaining,

cemeteries at 23,000 locations all over the world. Today, over a century after we first began, our work

continues through our staff, supporters and volunteers who preserve our unique cultural,

horticultural, and architectural heritage and ensure that the stories of those who died are told.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES and ACCOUNTABILITIES OF THE ROLE

General

Assist the Works Foreman in achieving the country objectives for cycle maintenance, including

erection of headstones, projects and unforeseen emergency work

Ensure all aspects of masonry work including the replacement, repairing, repointing and

cleaning of stone, brickwork, paving and any special features, the occasional engraving and re-

engraving of grave markers are all carried out to the standards set out in the Works Manual

Cut, shape and dress stone from a rough block to the required dimensions and finish.

Refurbishment of bronze work including maintaining swords, plaques and Register boxes is

carried out to the highest standard as laid out in the Works manual.

Ensure all Timberwork and Metalwork features are maintained according to the standards set

out in the Works Manual.

Carry out general maintenance to all the Commissions Base sites and accommodation as

instructed by the TS (Works).

Ensures that safe working practices and the Commissions Health & Safety policies and

procedures are always adhered to by all who work for and on behalf of the CWGC. Following

correct procedure for accidents at work & near misses.

Ensure that all tools, mechanical equipment supplied, properties and assigned vehicles are in

good running order, adhering to specified maintenance schedules and instructions and is used

effectively

Reports to whom is concerned the time spent and cost of materials used during cycle

maintenance and mileage, as well as the consumption of the tools and machinery supplied for

the performance of their work, further other data might be required by line managers or office.

Undertake such other duties required by the Line manager, within the job role, if required.

Frequent travel within Egypt

Fully engage with and ensure all the Commissions safety procedures and safe working

practices are observed, and that all safety instructions are followed at all times.

Team Performance

If required, stand in for the Works Foreman in his absence, taking responsibility of equipment,

vehicles and resources, deploying these in the most efficient and economical manner possible.

Education and Knowledge

Essential

A relevant recognised technical qualification or relevant experience working in a similar

position.

Demonstrable knowledge of all the principal materials, equipment, techniques, and

procedures required to maintain the Commissions standards

Desirable

the English Language is desirable or a willingness to learn

Experience

Essential

Experience of working within the construction industry with a broad range of structural skills

relevant to the work of the Commission, preferably including stonework, brickwork, concrete

work and mechanical skills.

Valid Driving license

A good level of computer literacy or the ability to learn quickly
