RESPONSIBILITY & AUTHORITY

Have a total responsibility for the engine department, motivate and follow up fellow workers.

ADMINISTRATION

Is responsible to prepare watch routines for the engine crew.

Is responsible for keeping the overtime lists for the engine department, and when completed handing them over to the Master.

To prepare handover report for next shift.

Assist in Masters Review and weekly, monthly and quarterly reports.

OPERATION

Have the daily supervision of the running of all machinery, including engines, compressors, propulsion and power supplies.

Select the correct operational modes for each machinery component, with special regard to fuel economy and life time costs for the different components.

Verify that engine room log, oil record book and other logs are kept according to laws, regulations and the Company's instructions and to counter sign every day.

To perform watch duties if required.

To be in the engine room during engine stand-by, when entering and leaving port or other special operations if required.

MAINTENANCE

Be responsible for the maintenance in the engine department.

Verify that the ships computerized planned maintenance system is used and updated and includes critical components and how to address them.

Verify that the components in the engine department are classed according to the CMS regulations of the Classification Society.

In close co-operation with the Chief Officer plan and initiate mechanical maintenance on deck components such as lifeboats, FRC, workboat, winches and cranes.


SPARE PARTS

The Chief Engineer is responsible for that the vessel has the necessary spare parts onboard in due time for all planned maintenance.

The Chief Engineer is responsible for reviewing the spare part stock and make recommendations for changes and ensures that the stock level reflects critical components.

The Chief Engineer shall verify that the ships computerized spare part system (PMS) is correct, used and updated continuously. Spare parts received onboard shall be marked as received in the system regardless if the parts are stored or used at once.

Prepare requisitions for spare parts and have them approved by the Master/Superintendent (as per Purchasing procedure).

Prepare purchase orders for local purchasing of spare parts or requisite and have them counter signed by the Master. A copy shall be forwarded to the Superintendent.


BUNKERING / FUELLING

Is responsible for the safety measures taken during bunkering and during transfer of oil products.

To prepare bunkering lube oil requests.

BUDGETING/COST CONTROL

To prepare a budget proposal for the department for the next year including normally used spare parts, CMS, service personnel and yard/docking.

To perform cost control and to give message to the Superintendent (via the Master) if it is clear that the budget will be exceeded or is too high. If the budget is exceeded only vital parts are to be ordered.


FILING AND DISTRIBUTION

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the preparation and updating of the necessary files regarding the engine department. The filing system shall be in accordance with the standard set forth by the Company.
