Job Purpose
The Business Development Lead is responsible for driving business growth by identifying new market
opportunities, securing new clients, strengthening existing client relationships, and leading strategic
initiatives that increase revenue and market share. The role oversees the end-to-end business
development process, including market intelligence, opportunity identification, tender management,
proposal development, contract negotiations, and strategic partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
Business Growth and Strategy
- Develop and implement the company's business development strategy.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the oil and gas value chain.
- Prepare annual business development plans aligned with organizational objectives.
- Monitor market trends, competitor activities, and emerging industry opportunities.
- Develop market entry strategies for new service offerings.
Client Relationship Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
- Serve as the primary contact for strategic accounts.
- Conduct regular client visits and relationship management meetings.
- Improve customer satisfaction and client retention.
- Develop long-term partnerships with key stakeholders.
Tender and Proposal Management
- Monitor tender portals and procurement opportunities.
- Evaluate Requests for Information (RFIs), Requests for Quotations (RFQs), Invitations to Tender (ITTs), and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
- Coordinate the preparation of technical and commercial proposals.
- Ensure timely submission of bids.
- Maintain a proposal repository and lessons learned database.
Contract Negotiation
- Lead commercial negotiations with clients.
- Work closely with the Legal Department on contract review.
- Ensure contractual obligations are commercially viable.
- Support contract renewals and amendments.
Revenue Generation
- Achieve annual sales and revenue targets.
- Develop sales forecasts and pipeline reports.
- Increase market penetration.
- Identify cross-selling and upselling opportunities.
Strategic Partnerships
- Identify and establish partnerships with local and international organizations.
- Build alliances that improve service delivery and competitiveness.
- Support joint venture and consortium arrangements where required.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Represent the company at conferences, exhibitions, networking events, and industry forums.
- Build relationships with regulators, clients, vendors, and strategic partners.
Market Intelligence
- Conduct market research.
- Monitor competitor pricing and market positioning.
- Prepare business intelligence reports for Management.
Compliance
Ensure compliance with:
o NUPRC requirements
o Nigerian Content Development requirements
o Company policies
o Ethical business practices
o Anti-bribery and anti-corruption policies
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, marketing or related discipline.
- MBA or a master's degree is an advantage.
- Membership of relevant professional bodies is desirable.
- Must be able to work under pressure and travel at short notice.
- Must be capable of representing the company with regulatory or government agencies.
Experience
- A minimum 5 – 10 years of experience in Business Development or Sales within the upstream
oil and gas industry.
- At least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
- Demonstrated experience managing large tenders, commercial negotiations and key client relationships.
- Experience working with international oil companies (IOCs), indigenous operators, or major service companies is an advantage.
- Advanced Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint proficiency.
- Familiarity with ERP (CRM) or contract management systems.
