Ambulance Driver

 Job Description:

The overall purpose of this job is to for driving or assisting on general transport, ambulance transporting sick, injured or convalescent persons over a 24/7 rota under the direction of the Security, Transport and Logistics Coordinator or. The post holder will also adhere to company requirements for recording transport journey times by using the provided documentation materials.

The job holder will also provide and maintain a caring environment for non-emergency patients and provide a transport service as appropriate for the needs of the patient.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  1. Provide a professional and caring service - The jobholder will ensure that the patients, whilst in the care of Medical Services, are comfortable and safe.
  2. Assist patients in and out of ambulances and cars With the assistance of a nurse, lift patients on to or off beds and move them to or from special service and treatment areas and operating rooms using wheelchairs or moveable beds.
  3. Drive and maintain critical care ambulance Ensure that the ambulance and other hospital vehicles are in good condition and ready at all times to transport the sick and injured. Report any damage to the ambulance. Conduct routine checks
  4. Communicate with dispatch and maintain constant communication with dispatch over radio and constantly give them status updates.
  5. Maintain inventory Keep stock of ambulance supplies such as oxygen gas, masks, gloves, and gowns and ensure that the ambulance is always stocked.
  6. Reassure patients, family-comfort patients, and their families by offering support and encouragement; being punctual and attentive to procedure schedules; and demonstrating caring and cultural sensitivity.
  7. Reporting: After every emergency trip, fill in report forms indicating the facts concerning accidents or emergencies in written, verbal, or electronic form and to law enforcement agencies as required by statutory regulations.
  8. Ferry medical supplies When instructed, collect and deliver lab samples and reports to the specified laboratory. Transport equipment and supplies by picking-up requisitioned orders, delivering them to assigned treatment areas and patient care areas,
  9. Provide first aid needed assist the paramedics in administering first aid as trained
  10. Maintain and enhance follow medical procedure and training at all times. Carry out risk assessments to assess hazards, then implement safe systems of work and reduce risks to self, patients, and other persons involved.
  11. Ensure Compliance with Statutory Regulations Continually keep track of ambulance legislation and advise management on how to maintain adherence to all statutory legislation. Uphold and maintain organizational policies.
  12. Respond to emergency Be ready at all times to respond to emergencies and as directed by the coordinator. Drive to and fro, emergency transporting injured and sick.


Key Performance Indicators

  • Assist with 90% functionality of transport bookings in all facilities.
  • Assist with proper care and customer service of vehicle transport-related documents.
  • Assist on monthly reports on ambulatory services rendered.
  • 100% manning of all the hospital vehicles and cleanliness at all times.
  • Daily reports on the status and conditions of the hospital vehicles.
  • Assist in following up on all transportation requests from staff initiated within 24 hours and issue progress reports on pending cases.
  • Assist on OPEX to be within the stipulated and assigned budget.
  • To ensure 100% compliance with the vehicles' statutory requirements as per the law, rules, and regulations of Kenya and best practices.
  • Designing effective and workable physical and personnel transportation procedures and processes.
  • Assist in reviewing and evaluating existing transport policy and operational procedure.
  • Daily reporting of vehicle status and road-related incidents.
  • Providing quality record keeping for current and future transport operations.
  • 100% transportation improvements of all approved assignment instructions at all times.
  • Assist in developing and controlling budgets and forecasts for all physical and personnel transport-related services for hospital facilities.
  • Assist in identifying new methods for cutting operating transport costs while increasing services.
  • Working in a cost-effective manner with minimum supervision of the assigned transport budget.
  • Ensuring that capital expenditure and OPEX are within the stipulated allocated and assigned budget.
  • Managing time and priorities given the diverse nature of the role and multiple demands from a range of stakeholders.
  • Timely and accurate reports.

Minimum Qualifications, Regulatory & Legal Requirements

  • At least O-level education with good spoken English and Kiswahili.
  • Be in possession of a valid certification in First Aid at Work and CPR/BLS.
  • Must have a valid certificate of good conduct from the National Police Service.
  • Must be in possession of a valid Class ABCE driving license.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of working experience as an ambulance driver with a good track record.
  • Must have passed the drivers test, including being in possession of a valid PSV.
  • Must have a valid Basic Life Support certificate and/or First Aid course certificate from a recognized institution.
  • Defensive driving course.
  • Ambulance operator course certificate.
  • Good general understanding of the different vehicle parts/vehicle care maintenance.
  • Good understanding of the local laws applicable to driving emergency vehicles.
  • Additional qualifications in Emergency Medical Training (EMT) will be an added advantage.
  • The assessment test by the AA driving school will be an added advantage.
  • Training in at least five (5) Disaster Management and Response Trainings preferably Incident Command System Course (ICS-01/02), Disaster Preparedness Planning Course (DPP), Emergency Operations Centre Course (EOC), Disaster Communication & Warning Course (DCW), etc., will be an added advantage.

Continuous Professional Development

  • To attend at least two new transport-related trainings per year.

Work Environment

  • The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity requires handling of average-weight objects and standing or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time.
  • Ability to traverse various areas of the facility to conduct inspections and plan security procedures
