JOB OVERVIEW:

The Data Platform Architect will design and govern a large-scale banking data platform to support real-time transactions, regulatory reporting, credit risk modelling, and analytics. Operating across Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud, the role focuses on platform architecture, real-time and batch ingestion, data governance, security, lineage, and integration between operational and analytical systems. The architect will ensure the platform is scalable, compliant, reliable, and able to support millions of users in a regulated environment.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

The Data Platform Architect will be responsible for designing the architecture, frameworks, governance, and data models that underpin a national-scale banking data platform. This includes defining ingestion pipelines for banking and payment systems, designing data structures for regulatory reporting and analytics, establishing governance and security layers, and supporting platform quality and auditability. The role also requires coordination with operational and analytics teams to ensure seamless integration, high performance, compliance, and resilience. The position operates in a hybrid model within Cape Town.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

- Deep understanding of enterprise data platforms across Azure, AWS or Google Cloud.

- Strong knowledge of data governance, regulatory reporting and banking compliance.

- Expertise in high-volume transaction data ingestion (real-time and batch).

- Ability to design scalable data models for analytics and reporting.

- Knowledge of data security, access control, lineage, and auditability requirements.

- Strong architectural thinking and systems design skills.

- Ability to collaborate across operational, engineering, analytics and compliance teams.

- Experience supporting platforms operating at national scale.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

- Relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or related field.

- Professional data or cloud certifications across Azure, AWS or Google Cloud (advantageous).

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

- Minimum 8+ years in data architecture.

- Strong experience within banking, payments, or regulated financial platforms.

- Deep experience designing modern data platforms across Azure, AWS or Google Cloud.

- Experience building platforms that support millions of users.

- Strong understanding of regulatory reporting, governance, security, and compliance.

- Experience defining and supporting real-time and batch data pipelines.

ADVANTAGEOUS SKILLS:

- Experience with credit risk modelling or financial analytics.

- Knowledge of large-scale event streaming or data lakehouse patterns.

- Exposure to data lineage, observability and automated data quality frameworks.

- Experience with integration between transactional and analytical systems.
