About the job (Campus Safety Specialist) POLICE OFCR 1
Job Summary
Under the general direction of a UC Police Department Police Sergeant, a successful CSS will work closely with the public and University units to proactively identify and solve community safety issues and security concerns on campus. Respond to both emergency and non-emergency calls for service. Responsibilities include: actively engaging at crime/incident scenes; maintaining security perimeters; interviewing victims and witnesses to crimes; collecting evidence; motor vehicle enforcement as necessary; preparing written and computer-generated crime reports; patrolling specified areas on foot, bicycle, or utilizing a patrol vehicle; delivering safety presentations to community members and groups; and executing assigned duties pursuant to University and UCPD policies and procedures. The CSS functions similarly to a sworn officer in responding to calls for service and is a key component of UCDPDs holistic and tiered approach to providing service and safeguarding the community.
POSITION INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must have a vision of 20/20 correctable to 20/30, with normal color vision.
- Must be able to sustain a walking foot beat; must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time
- Lift/carry a minimum of 30 pounds.
- May be required to work in a harsh environment such as rain, wind, cold and heat on occasion.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Program.
- Subject to completion of a comprehensive Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services
- Shift work; Working hours include days, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime.
- Work schedule is subject to change as needed
- Required to wear a uniform.
- Employee is personally responsible for following and adhering to safety guidelines and procedures.

The University of California prohibits smoking and tobacco use at all University owned or leased properties, or facilities operated by UC staff or faculty. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Additional Minimum License/Certification:
- Possess and maintain a valid Class C California driver's license.
Minimum Education/Experience:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- High school graduate of a U.S. high school or possess a GED.
- Must attend and pass a Community Services Officer academy within twelve months of being hired.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
- Not have been convicted of a felony as well as felony-level and felony-related offenses.
- Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
- Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
- Skills to communicate both orally and in written form; understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Customer service and communication skills to interact with individuals of varying cultural backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
- Must maintain a professional demeanor under stressful conditions.
- Ability to operate computer and other typical office equipment, input or retrieve computer data via keyboard or other means.
- Recall information received and complete necessary reports.
- Work independently with little supervision and exercise initiative and sound judgment in harmony and coordination with the larger UCDPD team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education/Experience:
- Current or recent University of California affiliation as a student or staff member.
- Experience or other qualifications that demonstrate decision making skills, interpersonal communication methods and techniques, de-escalation, and conflict resolution skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
- Skills to provide clear and concise information to public and staff when giving directions, explaining policies and procedures and persuading others to comply with requests.
- Skills to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
- Able to understand and interpret complex policies, procedures and personnel guidelines and communicate that information to others.
- Knowledge and understanding of current police practices, protocols, and procedures.
