Position Summary

Entry Level Apprentices coordinate and collaborate daily with customers and employees to achieve results. Primary areas of responsibility include:

  • Perform mechanic/technician/shop duties as tasked and instructed by mentor adhering to areas of service, quality, safety, and overall effectiveness related to Key Performance Indicators. This includes ownership for downtime and accountability for timely availability of the equipment.
  • Adhere to performance and safety standards in all areas of the shop.
  • Utilize shop specific software related to the sale and stocking of parts.

Reporting Structure

The Entry Level Apprentice will report directly to the Shop Supervisor. This person is also expected to interface with other management, including the leaders of the different business divisions and their assigned mentor.


Essential Functions & Major Accountabilities

  • Assist in Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily based on mechanical and/or electronic principles.
  • Depending on the chosen Apprentice Program - frequent use of shop equipment including but not limited to Gas, stick welding, fabrication, and torch use.
  • Using relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
  • Operation of vehicles and equipment used for diagnostic purposes.
  • Communicate effectively with manager/mentor, colleagues, and clients.
  • Use of logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Assist in troubleshooting via determining causes of operating errors and appropriate solutions.
  • Assist the parts department in stocking and sale of parts and maintaining an organized inventory.

Requirements Knowledge, Skills & Accountabilities

  • Entry level knowledge of general mechanics, including brakes, drive train, A/C and heat, cooling systems, electrical components, electronics (ECM, Body Controls), steering and suspension, diesel components, fuel systems, exhaust systems, welding abilities, and autobody repair principles.
  • Entry level knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to perform basic component repairs under supervision and with guidance.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals with mentor guidance.
  • Depending on the chosen Apprentice Program - Must have the entry level technical knowledge of truck equipment required, including transmissions, engines, fuel systems, hydraulics, electrical system, and autobody repair principles.
  • Must exhibit a sense of urgency, strong analytical skills, and great attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and equipment necessary for diagnostic purposes.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Valid drivers license or reliable transportation
  • Basic computer skills
  • Welding experience is highly valued
  • Must have a high school diploma OR be currently enrolled in high school
  • Minimum 1-2 semesters in a relevant trade curriculum at a Technical/Vocational/High School
  • Recommendation from a trade teacher or instructor preferred but not required
