About the job POLICE LIEUTENANT

Under general supervision supervises and manages personnel and resources of the Patrol Division, Training, Extra Events, and other duties essential in safety and security of the campus students, staff, personnel and community. Acts as liaison with university departments, other local, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Coordinates with other department personnel in ensuring department goals and objectives are met.

  • Supervision and management of personnel and resources of the Patrol Division responding to calls for service while protecting university assets and resources. Act as a first line supervisor to police patrol Sergeants. Act as a first line supervisor to police patrol Officers.
  • Coordinates schedules of Officers and supervisors for their regular tours of duty and special event functions.
  • Provides a safe and secure environment for university students, staff, administration, and the community.
  • Reviews current statistical data of incidents and crimes committed on and surrounding the university in order to develop a plan of action to address and or deter future incidents.
  • Enforcement of laws (municipal, county, state and federal).
  • Liaison for the university with other local, county, state and federal agencies within the community.
  • Deployment of departmental resources for events (numerous) held on and off the university.
  • Commands special events, overseeing the operation including the flow and efficiency of the supervisors and subordinate employees. At times this includes communicating with neighboring agencies and community partners.
  • Coordinates different areas within our agency and ensures the smooth operation of each function together. This is also accomplished with outside agencies and external groups. Collects and compiles Uniform crime statistics to state and national databases.
  • Administers the Records Management System and the Computer Aided Dispatching system.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education

Bachelors degree and/or vocational or technical school and/or specialized training or certification in area of law enforcement supervision AND four (4) years of experience as a commissioned officer with Texas Southern University Police Department, or a total of five (6) years combined experience, to include one year of experience at the next lowest rank.

Associate degree with 10 years of police experience with 3 years supervisory as a sergeant or 7 years supervisory at any level recognized by this department.

Required Licensing/Certification

  • Licensed as a Texas peace officer through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.
  • Valid Texas Drivers License.
  • Field Training Officer (FTO)
  • Advance Peace Officer Certification
  • Master peace officer certification preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • Federal, State, Local and County laws.
  • Requires full/complete knowledge in multiple disciplines and serves as an ultimate subject matter expert in at least one discipline or function. Demonstrates full command of technical and functional principles, procedures, and subject matter in multiple disciplines to handle any situation and lead or train others. Requires the ability to lead the development or modification of work procedures across multiple disciplines.
