Job Description
The Forensic Technician, periodically under potentially hazardous conditions and/or in contact with potentially hazardous substances, performs technical work in criminal identification matters including photography, collection and preservation of evidence, processing for latent fingerprints, examination of biological substances, and the physical documentation of crime scenes. The employee will work with investigative units both within and outside the agency. The Forensic Technician will be required to produce and issue reports on their findings, will be called upon to testify in court, hearings, and depositions, and may participate in Sheriffs Office recruitment and community activities. The employee will perform all the duties listed below and any other duties assigned by the supervisor or designee.
Requirements:
- Must have a Bachelors Degree in Forensic Science or a related hard science including completed coursework in Statistics as well as two (2) of the following three (3) courses: Biochemistry, Genetics, or Molecular Biology. Completion of all three (3) courses is preferred. The degree earned must be from a regionally accredited college.
- Must have a valid Florida drivers license.
- Must successfully complete civilian defensive driving within 3 months of employment.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and be on-call.
- Must be able to work in inclement/extreme weather and biological environments and be able to tolerate strong or foul odors.
- Must be able to work in limited-service locations such as attics, crawl spaces, under vehicles.
- One year of crime scene investigation experience is preferred
- IAI Certification in Crime Scene is preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to take and process photos and video.
- Ability to operate specialized equipment including metal detectors, FARO 3-D scanning, Total station, Foray Imaging System, and Photo Lab equipment.
- Must have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to express oneself clearly, concisely, and effectively.
- Ability to maintain records with computer entries, written reports, and sketches.
- Must possess initiative and be able to prioritize duties to meet deadlines.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to push or lift up to 50 pounds; bend, stoop, twist, kneel, crouch and have repetitive motion ability, and walk, sit or stand for long periods.
- Must be able to distinguish colors.
