Planner Associate Zoning

Description:
The Planner Associate (Zoning) is responsible for reviewing building and zoning permits, inspecting properties for compliance with zoning regulations, and issuing notices or summonses for violations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Examine site plans to verify zoning requirements.

  • Conduct field inspections of properties, occasionally outside normal business hours.

  • Research court records, permits, and documents for compliance.

  • Testify in court regarding zoning violations.

  • Attend and present at meetings and hearings, sometimes after hours.

  • Provide technical information and ordinance interpretations to the public.

  • Enter and maintain data in computer systems.

  • Research and prepare zoning code amendments.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of planning, zoning, site plans, and building plans.

  • Understanding of engineering principles, land use, landscape architecture, architecture, and construction methods.

  • Familiarity with zoning, subdivision, site development ordinances, rezoning, and special use permit processes.

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service, including handling difficult interactions.

  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills.

  • Research and analytical skills with attention to detail.

  • Ability to communicate planning and local government policy issues effectively to various audiences.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in city/urban planning, civil or environmental engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, real estate, law, or related field.

  • Three years of experience, or an equivalent amount of graduate-level training.

  • Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong customer service skills (in person, email, and phone).

  • Analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Strong writing skills.

  • Bilingual skills helpful.

  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
