Job Description:

Under broad guidance, the Plant Operator is responsible for operating and controlling all sewage treatment, solids handling, sustainable water initiative systems, and other ancillary facilities during work shifts. The role includes completing the Plant Operator Apprenticeship Program and performing various maintenance assignments as needed.

Job Requirements

Education (Required)

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Completion of a Plant Operator Apprenticeship Trade program or equivalent as approved by an Apprenticeship Committee.

Experience (Required)

  • Completion of the on-the-job training skills portion of an Apprenticeship program for this trade, or approved equivalent as determined by an Apprenticeship Committee.

Training Levels

  • Grade 5: Virginia Class 1 Wastewater Operator License, all relevant apprenticeship courses, and 100% of on-the-job training skills.

  • Grade 5a: Virginia Class 1 Wastewater Operator License OR completion of 22 apprenticeship courses, 66% of on-the-job training skills, and a Virginia Class 2 License.

  • Grade 5b: Virginia Class 2 License OR completion of 12 apprenticeship courses, 33% of on-the-job training skills, and a Virginia Class 3 License.

  • Grade 5c: No experience required.

Plant Operators must regularly test for their Virginia Wastewater Works Operator License until they achieve the fully qualified level. Failure to progress through training and licensing requirements may result in disciplinary action, up to and including removal from the position. A Class 1 license must be obtained within six years of appointment.

Special Licenses

  • Required: Virginia Class I Wastewater Works Operator License (must be obtained within six years of appointment).

  • Desired: Valid Drivers License from state of residence.
