Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing specialized operational, maintenance, and monitoring duties within a water treatment plant. The role ensures safe, efficient, and compliant treatment processes through equipment operation, system monitoring, laboratory testing, and routine maintenance activities. The position requires technical knowledge of treatment systems, regulatory requirements, and the ability to respond effectively to operational issues and emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate treatment plant equipment to control water flow and maintain proper operating levels

  • Monitor SCADA systems and adjust treatment operations to ensure efficient and compliant plant performance

  • Service, maintain, operate, and repair plant facilities and equipment, including pumping systems, chemical feed systems, storage facilities, and related components

  • Collect water samples and perform laboratory analyses to verify treatment effectiveness

  • Implement corrective actions based on chemical, biological, and regulatory requirements

  • Conduct routine plant rounds, read gauges and meters, and accurately record operational data

  • Maintain, calibrate, and repair mechanical and electrical equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, controllers, instrumentation, and monitoring devices

  • Maintain chemical analysis records and prepare operations, maintenance logs, and required regulatory reports

  • Maintain plant facilities to ensure safety and operational readiness

  • Read and interpret plans, maps, schematics, and technical specifications

  • Respond to after-hours and emergency situations as required

  • Attend required training and certification programs

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of specialized technical training related to water treatment plant operations in addition to a high school education

  • One to two years of experience in a similar role or completion of an apprenticeship or internship in water or wastewater treatment operations

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license appropriate for operating required vehicles or equipment

Certification Requirements (for Advanced Operator Level)

  • Successful completion of required regulatory testing and possession of a valid Water Treatment Plant Operator certification at the required grade level

  • Demonstrated understanding of plant flows, treatment processes, and system interdependencies

  • Ability to independently adjust flows and chemical dosing under normal operating conditions

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of water treatment principles, processes, and plant equipment

  • Working knowledge of chemistry, mathematics, hydraulics, and biology as applied to water treatment

  • Familiarity with computer systems and job-related software, including monitoring and reporting tools

  • Understanding of applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing water treatment operations

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, plans, maps, and specifications

  • Skill in operating and maintaining mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment

  • Strong planning, organization, and decision-making abilities

  • Ability to remain calm and think clearly in high-pressure or emergency situations

  • Effective oral and written communication skills
