The Switcher should possess adequate communication skills to understand written and spoken instructions, excellent safety awareness, and a sufficient level of physical fitness, as the job involves some manual labor.
Operating Equipment:
Comfortably operate a semi-truck with a trailer and use a yard tractor to move trailers in and out of docks or around the truck yard.
Back trailers up to dock doors, often with other trailers on either side.
Use warehouse equipment such as pallet jacks, manual jacks, and forklifts as needed.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
Clean out trailers before or after moving them using on-site equipment or an industrial broom.
Monitor and adjust temperature settings for refrigerated trailers based on load requirements.
Perform pre-and post-trip inspections on tractors and trailers.
Working Conditions:
Repeatedly climb in and out of tractors to hook, unhook, and inspect trailers.
Exposure to weather elements and frequent walking, bending, and lifting.
Responsibilities:
Ensure vehicle safety and the security of its contents.
Maintain vehicle cleanliness and security.
Ensure the truck has proper and current inspections.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be D.O.T. qualified, knowledgeable, and able to pass physical and substance abuse tests.
CDL Class A or B preferred but not required; a valid driver’s license is required.
Must possess a good driving record.
Ability to repeatedly lift up to sixty (60) pounds for unloading at multiple locations.
One-year verifiable tractor-trailer experience.
Courteous, professional demeanor.
Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills to maintain accurate delivery records.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must meet DOT standards for truck drivers, have a clean driving record, and pass a pre-employment substance abuse check.
Working Conditions:
Extended periods of driving.
Frequent standing, lifting, bending, and moving of heavy (sixty pounds +) materials.
Exposure to varying temperatures and seasonal climate conditions due to external work.
