Position Description

Assists in managing a department that has institutional oversight responsibilities. Responsible for the development, coordination, and administration of the department.

Major/Essential Functions

This position is responsible for providing oversight and leading the banking, payment card processing, and accounts receivable department within Accounting Services. Responsible for planning, supervising, administering, and directing the activity of accounting staff in this area. Assists with the development, oversight, and implementation of policies, procedures, and internal controls.

Duties will include performing both routine and non-routine accounting tasks and financial analysis functions to support business processes and administrative monitoring of overall financial health. The position requires an individual skilled in effective communication and supervision of both processes and employees.

Functions include:

Assist leadership with departmental planning and decision-making.
Create and maintain accounting process documents, policies, and procedures.
Supervise and train new employees, monitor employee performance, write position descriptions, conduct employee evaluations, hold one-on-one meetings, conduct team meetings, and coordinate coverage for vacancies.
Provide oversight of compliance efforts related to payment card processing and related security regulations, working collaboratively with compliance and IT departments.
Provide managerial support and expertise in banking, payment card processing, and accounts receivable operations.
Assist with risk assessments and oversight functions related to internal controls for banking, cash handling, payment card processing, and general ledger operations.
Evaluate current processes and operations and recommend improvements.
Provide functional and technical expertise and training for accounting staff, ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures.
Ensure accurate and timely monthly and year-end close processes, including approvals, reviews, and reconciliations.
Manage finance and accounting system implementations.
Perform financial data analysis and monitor transactions to ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
Develop strategies, processes, and workflows to improve accounting and administrative processes.
Use independent judgment and make decisions based on established guidelines, regulations, and compliance standards.
Review documents to determine specific terms, conditions, and reporting requirements.
Supervise and communicate effectively with employees, fostering a positive and professional work environment.
Review and approve financial transactions and reports prepared by team members.
Participate in training and professional development related to accounting, finance, and leadership.
Use proactive, clear, and professional communication to provide updates and relevant information to leadership and colleagues.
Build cross-functional partnerships with internal stakeholders across the organization.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field plus six years of administrative or management experience. Additional education may be substituted for required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Experience managing teams and working collaboratively across departments.
Experience in financial data organization and summarization.
Experience with financial/accounting systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
Accounting or finance experience at a public institution of higher education.
Experience in governmental/fund accounting.
Experience using data querying/reporting tools like Cognos Analytics.
Knowledge of Banner finance system.
Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Experience in organizing and summarizing large amounts of data.
Experience supervising employees with strong skills in communication, emotional intelligence, coaching, staff development, and teamwork.
CPA certification.
