Job Description:
Repair, maintain, and replace bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, specifications, procedures, and equipment operation standards.
Key Responsibilities

Construction Operations: Perform skilled tasks including carpentry, welding, and concrete finishing. Remove and install structural components to erect, replace, or demolish structures.

Emergency Operations: Place temporary bridges, remove damaged structures, and operate equipment for snow/ice removal and other emergency responses. Clear roadways of snow, ice, debris, and accident aftermath. Provide traffic control as needed.

Environmental Protection: Apply in-stream and environmental protection measures during all structural maintenance and construction activities.

Equipment Operation: Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to complete maintenance and construction tasks.

Job Safety: Demonstrate proper worksite protection techniques. Identify workplace hazards and recommend improvements. Wear required PPE, follow OSHA/VOSHA rules, apply MUTCD standards, and maintain a clean, orderly, safe work environment.

Manual Labor: Work as part of a crew to construct, repair, and maintain timber, steel, and concrete bridge elements and related structures. Perform manual labor and support tasks as needed.

Preventative Maintenance: Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on tools and equipment. Transport personnel, materials, and equipment to/from work sites. Complete pre-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Ability to obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter (must comply with DOT standards when operating CDL equipment).

Ability to perform heavy manual labor, mathematical calculations, and work at heights, over/in water, in heavy traffic, and under adverse conditions.

Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Knowledge of highway/bridge maintenance methods, materials, equipment, and safety practices.

Skill in carpentry, concrete forming/finishing, welding, and fabricating steel components.

Skill in operating light and medium-duty equipment (dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, etc.) and using hand/power tools.
Minimum Qualifications

Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

Ability to perform mathematical calculations for layout and measurement of bridges/culverts.

Ability to perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on tools/equipment.

Ability to work under adverse conditions (heights, water, heavy traffic, weather).

Knowledge of bridge maintenance methods, materials, equipment, and safety practices.

Safety shoes required.

Skills in carpentry, welding, concrete work, equipment operation, and use of hand/power tools.
Additional Considerations

Training, education, or experience in Construction or related field.

Experience fabricating/welding steel components.
-
Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
-
Experience in carpentry, form building, falsework, and concrete placement/finishing.

Experience with equipment operation and tool use.
-
Flagger certification.
-
Certified Crane Operator with endorsements.
-
Commercial Drivers License with endorsements.
