Job Description:

Design and detail structures and bridges for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects. Check statically determinate and indeterminate structures of concrete and steel for alignment, strength, and economy using AASHTO specifications. Prepare plans, compute material quantities, and provide construction support. Review plans prepared by others for accuracy and compliance. Provide technical advice, training, and engineering consultation. Manage assigned projects to ensure timely, accurate completion and communicate with internal staff, government agencies, consultants, and the public regarding transportation projects and programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analysis & Technical Reporting: Analyze and interpret engineering data. Prepare clear, concise reports and recommendations.

  • Communication: Establish effective communication with contractors, agencies, and the public. Investigate issues and resolve complaints.

  • Design, Analyze & Check Structural Elements: Prepare bridge and structure designs for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation. Develop structural drawings and check plans prepared by others. Ensure shop plans meet AASHTO specifications and project requirements. Inspect and analyze structures for load capacity and rehabilitation needs.

  • Engineering Process Management: Apply established policies and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.

  • Manage Activities: Plan, schedule, and coordinate program activities to meet deliverables on time.

  • Project Engineering: Assist in project management, including scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, and reporting.

  • Special Assignments: Manage special initiatives and represent the program area on committees and work groups.

  • Teamwork & Customer Service: Demonstrate customer service values and facilitate effective information sharing.

  • Technical Guidance & Support: Provide technical guidance and solutions to bridge construction issues. Recommend cost-effective strategies, document occurrences, and participate in meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in structural engineering, including strength of materials, statics, and analysis.

  • Experience applying AASHTO and LRFD specifications.

  • Ability to design and review structural plans and administer consultant contracts.

  • Ability to estimate quantities and costs of materials.

  • Proficiency in engineering and design software.

Additional Considerations

  • Education, training, or experience in Civil Engineering or a related field.

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • Experience in bridge and structure design and analysis.

  • Familiarity with AASHTOs LRFD design specifications.
