Job Summary
The Roadway Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks to support roadway maintenance and repair activities. This position plays a key role in ensuring safe and efficient transportation operations, including emergency response during inclement weather and roadway incidents.
Key Responsibilities
Emergency Operations

Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other emergency operations.

Clear roadways of snow, ice, debris, and perform cleanup after accidents.

Provide on-site traffic control and support emergency response teams.
Equipment Operations
-
Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment and vehicles.

Perform maintenance and construction-related work safely and efficiently.
Job Safety

Apply proper work site protection techniques and follow all safety protocols.

Identify and report workplace hazards; recommend improvements.

Maintain compliance with OSHA, VOSHA, and MUTCD standards.

Keep work environments clean, organized, and hazard-free.
Manual Labor

Perform manual labor tasks as part of a crew to complete maintenance projects.

Utilize various hand and power tools to carry out assigned duties.
Preventive Maintenance

Conduct inspections and perform routine maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment.

Ensure all equipment is properly serviced and safe for operation.
Traffic Control Devices

Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, and lane closures.

Follow MUTCD standards for placement and safety.

Assist in tracking inventory and maintaining accurate work records.
Required Skills & Qualifications

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to read, interpret, and follow oral and written instructions, work plans, and specifications.

Capable of performing heavy manual labor and working as part of a team.

Knowledge of highway maintenance methods, materials, equipment, and safety practices.

Understanding of work zone safety, traffic controls, and flagging operations per MUTCD standards.

Skill in operating and maintaining hand and power tools.

Skill in operating light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Working knowledge of federal and state traffic control regulations.
Minimum Qualifications

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain compliance thereafter.

Ability to perform physically demanding labor and operate various equipment.

Knowledge of maintenance procedures, materials, and safety requirements.

Proficiency in operating and maintaining hand, power, and heavy equipment.
-
Safety shoes required.
