The Vet Office is recruiting an experienced Emergency & Critical Care Veterinary Surgeon on behalf of a well-established, fully equipped ECC practice in County Kildare.
This role is ideal for a veterinary surgeon who thrives in emergency medicine, enjoys autonomy and responsibility, and is looking for a structured night rota with genuine work–life balance.
The Opportunity
The successful candidate will join a dedicated emergency and critical care service operating overnight in a modern, well-equipped clinic designed specifically for ECC work.
This is a night-focused role, offering exposure to a wide variety of emergency and critical cases, supported by experienced nursing staff and robust clinical protocols. The practice is committed to delivering world-class emergency care 24/7, while also protecting the wellbeing of its clinical team.

Key Responsibilities
Emergency Assessment & Triage

Rapid assessment and prioritisation of emergency cases

Thorough clinical examinations and immediate treatment planning
Critical Decision-Making
-
Independent decision-making in high-pressure, life-threatening situations

Risk assessment and selection of appropriate interventions
Emergency Procedures & Treatments
-
Trauma stabilisation, wound management, CPR and emergency interventions
-
Administration of advanced emergency therapies (oxygen, transfusions, analgesia)
Diagnostics
-
Interpretation of blood work, imaging (X-ray, ultrasound) and other diagnostics
-
Ongoing reassessment and adaptation of treatment plans
Emergency Surgery & Anaesthesia
-
Anaesthetic management of critical patients
-
Performance of emergency surgical procedures appropriate to an ECC setting
Critical Care Management
-
Monitoring and management of hospitalised critical patients
-
Implementation of fluid therapy, medication protocols and supportive care
Client Communication
-
Clear, compassionate communication with clients during stressful situations
-
Support with difficult decisions and end-of-life discussions when required
Team Collaboration & Compliance

Close collaboration with nursing and veterinary colleagues
-
Accurate clinical record keeping and compliance with VCI standards
Candidate Requirements
Essential
-
MVB (or equivalent)
-
Current registration with the Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI)
-
Minimum 3 years post-graduation experience in small animal practice

Confidence working independently in emergency situations

Additional ECC-related qualifications

Previous experience in a busy emergency or referral hospital
