Overview
The Material Buyer supports procurement activities for shipbuilding, repair, and maintenance operations by sourcing materials, components, equipment, and supplies required to meet production schedules. This role manages supplier relationships, negotiates pricing and terms, and ensures the timely and accurate flow of materials into the shipyard. The Material Buyer works closely with Production, Planning, Engineering, and Quality teams to maintain an efficient and reliable supply chain.

Responsibilities

  • Source and procure materials, components, equipment, and consumables required for shipyard operations

  • Review requisitions, verify specifications, and obtain competitive quotations

  • Evaluate suppliers based on cost, quality, lead time, reliability, and compliance

  • Negotiate pricing, terms, delivery schedules, and contractual conditions

  • Maintain supplier relationships and manage ongoing performance

  • Process and track purchase orders from issuance through final delivery

  • Coordinate logistics, shipping, and delivery requirements to meet production deadlines

  • Monitor inventory levels and ensure material availability for current and upcoming projects

  • Resolve discrepancies related to pricing, quantity, quality, or shipping

  • Support strategic sourcing initiatives and cost-reduction efforts

  • Work with Engineering and Quality to ensure purchased materials meet specifications and regulatory requirements

  • Maintain accurate procurement records, documentation, and ERP data

  • Generate reports and provide updates on order status, supplier performance, and material risks

Requirements

  • Prior experience as a Buyer or Purchasing professional in a shipyard, marine, heavy manufacturing, industrial, or defense environment

  • Strong negotiation skills and experience securing competitive pricing and terms

  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, drawings, and material requirements

  • Proficiency with ERP or supply chain management systems (Oracle or similar preferred)

  • Solid analytical skills with the ability to evaluate supplier data, cost trends, and market conditions

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and related procurement tools

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interactions with suppliers and internal teams

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, high volumes of purchase orders, and production-driven deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience procuring maritime materials such as steel, valves, piping, electrical components, coatings, and OEM shipboard systems

  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements (ABS, NAVSEA, USCG, ISO)

  • Background in strategic sourcing or supplier performance management
