About the job EHS Specialist
The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist provides on-site safety and environmental oversight in a shipyard and industrial operations environment. This role supports production by ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local EHS regulations, enforcing company safety policies, identifying hazards, and implementing corrective actions. The EHS Specialist works closely with production leadership, subcontractors, and employees to maintain a safe and compliant work environment across ship repair and shipbuilding operations.
Responsibilities

Conduct daily EHS inspections of assigned shipyard areas, vessels, and subcontractor operations

Identify environmental, health, and safety hazards and initiate corrective actions through production supervision

Ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local OSHA regulations and environmental requirements

Perform accident, incident, and near-miss investigations and prepare detailed written reports

Maintain OSHA 300 logs and track injury and illness statistics; communicate trends to management

Prepare and maintain environmental reports required by Federal, State, and corporate entities
-
Conduct safety training including new hire orientation, recall orientation, subcontractor orientation, and specialized safety training

Develop and deliver EHS training materials, gangbox talks, and safety communications

Review EHS reports and training materials prepared by subordinate personnel, when applicable
-
Monitor work areas for unsafe or unhealthful conditions and take immediate action when serious hazards are identified

Encourage employee reporting of unsafe conditions and solicit improvement suggestions

Attend and lead EHS meetings with management, safety committees, and production teams

Maintain close coordination with production managers, ship managers, and area supervisors

Review current EHS regulations, trade publications, and industry guidance to remain current

Use computer software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to prepare reports and presentations

Perform other duties as assigned in support of shipyard safety and compliance objectives
Requirements

High School Diploma or GED with 6–10 years of directly related EHS experience, OR
-
Bachelors degree with 4–7 years of EHS experience in an industrial or shipyard environment

Strong working knowledge of Federal and State OSHA regulations, including maritime standards

Experience conducting EHS inspections, investigations, and training in shipyard or heavy industrial operations

Knowledge of OSHA recordkeeping requirements and basic medical terminology

Knowledge of environmental compliance requirements at Federal, State, and Local levels

Ability to independently manage EHS programs at off-site or remote locations

Experience working with hazardous materials and industrial equipment

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to interact professionally with employees, subcontractors, customers, and vendors

Valid U.S. Passport and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required

Work Environment / Physical Demands

Work is performed primarily in an active shipyard and aboard vessels under construction or repair

Requires frequent walking, climbing ladders, crawling, crouching, kneeling, and working in confined spaces

Ability to access vessels, scaffolding, ladders, and elevated work areas

Exposure to noise, dust, vapors, welding fumes, gases, and outdoor weather conditions

Must be able to work at heights and in restricted spaces

Up to 80% of time spent outdoors in all climates

Noise levels range from moderate to extremely loud

Travel up to 30%, including international travel, may be required
