Job Openings Commissioning Technician (Electrical & Instrumentation)

About the job Commissioning Technician (Electrical & Instrumentation)

Position: Commissioning Technician (Electrical & Instrumentation)

Location: Netherlands

Start: Apr/May 2025

Duration: Long-term

The initial work will take place onshore at our clients facility in the Netherlands followed by offshore commissioning after the transportation, installation (T&I), and hookup phases. This is an exciting opportunity to work on high-impact renewable energy projects while collaborating with diverse teams of subcontractors.

Position Overview:

As a Commissioning Technician (Electrical & Instrumentation), you will be responsible for the commissioning and testing of various electrical and instrumentation systems (excluding high-voltage equipment) on the offshore substation (OSS). You will work onshore during the preparation and testing phases, and later transition to offshore activities. Key responsibilities include coordinating with subcontractors to ensure systems like low-voltage switchboards, UPS systems, HVAC, fire extinguishing systems, cranes, and platform communication networks are installed, tested, and commissioned in line with project timelines and standards.

You will be part of a commissioning team, working to manage subcontractors and ensure that quality and performance targets are met efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Commissioning & Testing:
  • Hands-on commissioning and testing of electrical and instrumentation systems including but not limited to:
  • LV Switchboards and Distribution Boards
  • DC and AC UPS Systems (60VDC, 220VDC, 230VAC)
  • Fire Extinguishing Systems (inert gas, water mist, heli deck)
  • HVAC Systems (air handling, cooling)
  • Lighting & Small Power Systems
  • Sanitary & Technical Water Systems
  • Diesel Storage and Transfer Systems
  • Cranes (Overhead, Pedestal, Davit)
  • PAGA, Telecom, and Communication Systems (PABX)
  • CCTV, Access Control, and AIS Systems

Subcontractor Coordination:

Manage and oversee the activities of subcontractors who are responsible for commissioning their respective (sub)systems. Ensure that the commissioning work is completed on time, within the defined quality standards, and according to safety protocols.

Platform Automation:

Although there is no SCADA system, ensure seamless commissioning of automation systems via MODBUS communication to the client’s auxiliary SCADA.

Problem Solving & Troubleshooting:

Quickly identify, troubleshoot, and resolve any issues related to electrical, instrumentation, or control systems during both onshore and offshore commissioning.

Collaboration & Reporting:

Work closely with the commissioning team, project engineers, and subcontractors to meet project objectives. Document progress and prepare detailed test reports for completed systems.

Safety & Compliance:

Ensure all commissioning activities are carried out according to the clients safety standards and industry best practices.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education/Certifications:
  • Technical degree/diploma in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, or related fields.
  • Offshore survival certification (GWO or equivalent) preferred.
  • Additional certifications related to commissioning and electrical systems are a plus.
  • Proficient in the English language, Dutch would be a benefit
  • VCA for supervisors

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience in commissioning electrical and instrumentation systems, with specific experience in low-voltage systems, UPS systems, HVAC, fire protection, and platform automation.
  • Experience in managing subcontractors and coordinating the commissioning of multiple subsystems is highly desirable.
  • Offshore project experience is preferred.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in commissioning low-voltage electrical systems, control instrumentation, UPS, and automation platforms.
  • Understanding of MODBUS communication protocols and auxiliary PLC systems.
  • Ability to interpret and work from electrical and instrumentation diagrams, P&IDs, and technical drawings.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on quality and results.
  • Excellent team player with strong communication skills for collaborating with colleagues and managing subcontractor teams.
  • Ability to work under pressure in both onshore and offshore environments while adhering to strict timelines.

Working Conditions:

  • Onshore & Offshore:

The role will initially be based at the onshore facility in the Netherlands during the preparation, testing, and commissioning phases. After transportation and installation (T&I), the work will continue offshore during the hookup and commissioning phases.

Offshore Environment:

Offshore work requires flexibility and the ability to work in dynamic, challenging environments.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to work in offshore conditions, including physical tasks like lifting, climbing, and working at heights.
