About Opal

Opal is a San Francisco consumer hardware company building AI-native devices. It previously shipped the C1 and Tadpole cameras and now runs as an R&D studio for consumer products, with the first device in its new lineup launching this year.

Opal raised a $40M Series B led by OpenAI, with Samsung, Founders Fund and the founders of Instagram, Airbnb and YouTube also investing. The team is about 22 people, with four in software and five to six in hardware.

The Role

The companion app is the primary interface to Opal's hardware, so this role is central. You will own BLE and Wi-Fi pairing, reconnection and background connectivity, firmware updates delivered through the app, a real-time UI that reflects live device state and streaming data, and AI features that coordinate on-device inference with cloud processing. You will report to the Software Engineering Manager (Stanford PhD; previously NVIDIA, Google and an AI voice startup) and work closely with hardware, firmware, backend and ML.

What You Will Do

• Build device pairing and connectivity: BLE and Wi-Fi flows, reconnection, background connectivity and firmware update delivery.
• Build a low-latency UI that reflects live device state and data streams.
• Ship on-device and cloud AI features.
• Own the companion app architecture: device state, sync, and graceful offline and degraded-connectivity handling.
• Go deep on the platform: background modes, push notifications, Bluetooth permissions, and battery and performance optimization.

What You Bring

• 2-5 years of experience
• Strong Swift and SwiftUI/UIKit experience shipping production iOS apps
• Experience with Core Bluetooth and/or real-time data streaming
• End-to-end feature ownership through App Store release
• Cross-functional work with hardware, firmware, and backend/ML teams
• The ability to self-manage in a small engineering team
