Primary Responsibilities:

  • Microbiology: includes the subspecialties of Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Virology, and Parasitology.
  • Core Laboratory 1: includes General and Special Chemistry, Blood gases, Immunology, and Serology, and knowledge of manual and automation lines.
  • Core Laboratory 2: includes Hematology, Coagulation, Special Coagulation, and Urinalysis.
  • Transfusion Services (Blood Bank): includes Blood Transfusion medicine, and Blood Utilization and Waste.
  • Phlebotomist: Venipuncture and skin puncture. Specimen preparation for reference laboratories.

Quality Management and Quality Control: Directs the collection of data for studies related to quality improvement; including monitoring of patient turn-around times (TAT). Manages inspections with oversight of laboratory Quality Control and Quality Assurance document control to meet accreditation standards.

Knowledge and Education:

Experience

  • LIS: Experience with CERNER Laboratory Information System is favorable
  • Preferred, 5 years of experience working as a Laboratory Technologist at a Critical Access Hospital

Education

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, or a closely related field according to current applicable state and federal regulations.

License

  • A current State of Nevada Clinical Laboratory Technologist license as a General Supervisor is required.

Shifts: NIGHT 2100-0730, 4x10 (some weekends and holidays)

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Performs routine and special laboratory tests.

2. Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action.

3. Calls critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria.

4. Performs quality-control tests within designated areas and within designated guidelines. Holds patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Reports an unresolved situation to the laboratory manager.

5. Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting following department preventive maintenance schedules. Performs and documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routine maintenance, and problems and maintains corrective action log.

6. Helps evaluate new techniques and procedures in terms of space and personnel requirements, method comparison, cost analysis, and the establishment of reference intervals.

7. Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area.

8. Performs specimen collection and processing duties as needed or assigned and according to policies established in the phlebotomy area.

9. Utilizes techniques of infection control, including proper hand washing and observing standard precautions.

10. Keeps work area neat and clean, and restocks daily supplies. Performs laboratory cleanup as requested. Assists in inventory control and supply requisition.

11. Maintains harmonious relationships and open lines of communication within the unit and with other departments, staff, physicians, and other support personnel providing support and assistance to ensure quality patient care.

12. Demonstrates appropriate judgment in notifying/communicating with physicians.

13. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients, their families, and other staff members.

14. Demonstrates technical competency through equipment certification, attending manufacturers sponsored in-services, and additional training as required.

15. Satisfactorily completes competencies as required/requested to maintain and demonstrate current, accurate, and appropriate knowledge when performing laboratory procedures and/or management skills.

16. Actively participates in the review of policies and procedures for the laboratory department on an annual basis.

17. Is resourceful and calm in emergencies.

18. Participates in rotation of stand-by calls and responds according to department policies and procedures.

19. Maintains confidentiality of all patient/resident/staff information.

20. Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.
