Responsibilities

The Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) is seeking outstanding candidates for a Principal Electrical Engineer position supporting the Neutron Diagnosed Subcritical Experiments (NDSE) Project. NDSE is responsible for installing the Z-Pinch Experimental Underground System (ZEUS). In this role, you will be expected to apply a range of electrical engineering concepts and techniques to help mature, characterize, install, operate and maintain the systems that make up the ZEUS machine.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a team which includes scientists, engineers, technicians, and students from the NNSS, Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
  • Work with the Program Manager to obtaining funding and understand long term goals to inform and develop the annual execution plan.
  • Perform project management functions in addition to technical work including regular report outs to leadership, customers and the project team.
  • Development of system documentation including installation and testing procedures.
  • Review of system integration drawings.
  • Proficient with electronic hardware systems and measurement equipment.
  • Perform data analysis and document results.
  • Contribute to strategies, reports, and technical proposals.
  • Serve as an internal subject matter expert and is recognized by their colleagues as such.


Qualifications

  • Minimum Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees
    • Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering
    • Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB)
    • Or Professional Engineer license
  • Plus at least 9 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specializatio n or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Knowledge of how codes and standards of other disciplines affect their discipline.
  • Knowledge and experience in radiation detectors, especially current-mode applications.
  • Experience with Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) system is preferred.
  • Experience configuring, commissioning, and testing embedded-systems
  • Testing, evaluating, and fielding electronic diagnostic systems preferred.
  • Experience adhering to software development processes and configuration management.
  • Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems and time management, organization, and planning skills with experience prioritizing concurrent technical tasks.
  • Must be able to execute work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
  • Solid understanding of Earn Value Management System (EVMS) is preferred.
  • Prior Department of Energy (DOE) complex work experience preferred but not required.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and social skills necessary to work effectively in a large technical team environment.
  • Must be able to collaborate well in a multi-institutional environment with all levels of staff and management.
  • The work location will be at the ZEBRA or PULSE facilities at the Nevada National Security Site (located 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada), and at the North Las Vegas facility, as needed to support the team.

  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2 , “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709 , “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

Annual salary range for this position is: $116,438.40 - $177,569.60.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
