Position Overview:
The Chief Underwriting Officer is responsible for leading the organization's underwriting function, ensuring disciplined risk selection, pricing accuracy, and portfolio profitability. The CUO oversees underwriting policies, frameworks, and teams across all product lines, balancing growth objectives with risk management while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Underwriting Strategy & Governance
- Develop and implement underwriting strategies aligned with business goals and risk appetite.
- Establish underwriting policies, standards, and guidelines across all insurance products.
- Ensure consistency and quality in underwriting decisions.
2. Risk Assessment & Pricing
- Oversee risk evaluation processes and pricing models.
- Ensure accurate risk selection to maintain portfolio profitability.
- Monitor underwriting performance and adjust pricing strategies as needed.
3. Portfolio Management & Performance
- Manage underwriting portfolio across product lines (life, health, general insurance, etc.).
- Monitor key metrics such as loss ratio, combined ratio, and underwriting profitability.
- Identify trends and implement corrective actions for underperforming segments.
4. Product Development Support
- Collaborate with product teams to design new insurance offerings.
- Provide underwriting insights for product pricing and risk structures.
- Ensure new products align with underwriting standards and risk appetite.
5. Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Ensure underwriting practices comply with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
- Maintain strong governance and audit readiness.
- Coordinate with compliance, legal, and audit teams.
6. Data Analytics & Technology
- Leverage data analytics and predictive modeling to improve underwriting decisions.
- Implement underwriting automation and digital tools.
- Enhance data quality and reporting capabilities.
7. Reinsurance & Risk Transfer
- Develop reinsurance strategies to manage risk exposure.
- Work with reinsurers to structure treaties and agreements.
- Monitor reinsurance effectiveness and cost efficiency.
8. Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and mentor underwriting teams across regions and product lines.
- Build a high-performance culture focused on risk discipline and innovation.
- Ensure continuous training and professional development.
9. Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with sales, claims, actuarial, and risk teams.
- Engage with brokers, reinsurers, and external partners.
- Represent underwriting function in executive discussions and committees.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Insurance, Actuarial Science, or related field; professional insurance or actuarial certifications preferred.
- 12–15+ years of experience in underwriting, with significant leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of underwriting principles, pricing, and risk management.
- Proven track record in managing underwriting portfolios and driving profitability.
