Position Overview
The Chief ESG Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the organization's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy and initiatives. The role ensures ESG principles are embedded across business operations, investment strategies, governance frameworks, and stakeholder engagement activities. The CESGO drives sustainable business practices, regulatory compliance, ESG reporting, and long-term value creation while enhancing the organization's reputation and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
ESG Strategy & Integration
- Develop and execute the organization's ESG strategy aligned with corporate objectives and stakeholder expectations.
- Integrate ESG principles into business operations, investment decisions, risk management, and corporate governance.
- Establish ESG priorities, targets, and implementation roadmaps.
Environmental Initiatives
- Lead environmental sustainability programs focused on climate risk, carbon reduction, energy efficiency, and resource management.
- Support net-zero and sustainability commitments where applicable.
- Monitor environmental impact metrics and performance benchmarks.
Social Responsibility & Impact
- Drive initiatives related to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), employee well-being, and community engagement.
- Oversee social responsibility programs and ethical business practices.
- Promote employee engagement and positive social impact initiatives.
Governance & Compliance
- Establish ESG governance frameworks, policies, and standards.
- Ensure compliance with ESG-related regulations, disclosure requirements, and industry standards.
- Coordinate with legal, compliance, audit, and risk management teams.
ESG Reporting & Disclosure
- Oversee ESG reporting, sustainability disclosures, and impact measurement.
- Ensure alignment with recognized frameworks such as GRI, SASB, TCFD, ISSB, and UN PRI where applicable.
- Prepare ESG reports for investors, regulators, clients, and stakeholders.
Risk Management & ESG Analytics
- Identify and assess ESG-related risks and opportunities affecting the organization.
- Develop ESG metrics, dashboards, and performance tracking systems.
- Support enterprise risk management with ESG-focused insights.
Stakeholder & Investor Engagement
- Engage with investors, regulators, rating agencies, clients, and community stakeholders on ESG matters.
- Communicate ESG strategy, progress, and impact effectively.
- Represent the organization in ESG and sustainability forums.
Sustainable Finance & Business Innovation
- Support development of sustainable finance, green investment, and responsible business initiatives.
- Collaborate with business units to identify ESG-driven growth opportunities.
- Promote innovation aligned with sustainability objectives.
Leadership & Organizational Culture
- Lead and mentor ESG and sustainability teams.
- Foster a culture of accountability, ethics, and sustainability across the organization.
- Drive ESG awareness and training initiatives internally.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Finance, Business Administration, or related field; Master's degree preferred.
- 12–15+ years of experience in ESG, sustainability, governance, corporate responsibility, or related leadership roles.
- Strong understanding of ESG frameworks, sustainability reporting, and regulatory requirements.
- Proven experience implementing ESG strategies in corporate or financial services environments.
