Role Profile - Server Specialist
Job Summary
The Server Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining server infrastructure to ensure optimal performance, security, and reliability. This role involves managing physical and virtual servers, storage systems, and related technologies, while providing technical expertise and support to internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and maintain Windows/Linux servers and virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
- Monitor server performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement corrective actions.
- Manage Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
- Perform regular backups and disaster recovery planning.
- Apply security patches and updates to maintain compliance.
- Collaborate with network and application teams for system integration.
- Document configurations, processes, and troubleshooting steps.
- Provide Tier 2/3 support for server-related incidents.
- Plan and execute server migrations and upgrades.
- Implement and maintain high-availability and failover solutions.
- Monitor and optimize resource utilization across servers and storage.
- Ensure compliance with organizational security policies and industry standards.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts for routine tasks (PowerShell, Bash).
- Participate in capacity planning and forecasting for server infrastructure.
- Assist in cloud integration and hybrid environment management (Azure/AWS).
- Conduct regular vulnerability assessments and remediation.
- Train and mentor junior IT staff on server technologies and best practices.
- Prepare reports on server health, performance, and utilization for management.
Required Knowledge
- Operating Systems: Windows Server (2016/2019/2022), Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat).
- Virtualization: VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V.
- Storage: SAN/NAS technologies, RAID configurations.
- Networking Basics: TCP/IP, VLANs, firewalls.
- Cloud Platforms: Azure, AWS (preferred).
- Security: Server hardening, patch management, antivirus solutions.
- Backup & Recovery: Veeam, Commvault, or similar tools.
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience in server administration.
- Experience in managing enterprise-level infrastructure.
- Proven track record in troubleshooting complex server issues.
- Familiarity with ITIL processes (incident, change, problem management).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Proficiency in scripting (PowerShell, Bash) for automation.
- Team-oriented with the ability to work independently.
- Certifications (Preferred)
- Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate.
- VMware Certified Professional (VCP).
- CompTIA Server+ or equivalent.
