The Chief Geopolitical Risk Officer is responsible for identifying, assessing, and managing geopolitical, macro-political, regulatory, and country-level risks that may impact the organization's global operations, investments, supply chains, and strategic decisions. The role provides forward-looking intelligence and scenario analysis to support executive decision-making and ensure organizational resilience in an increasingly complex global environment.

Key Responsibilities

Geopolitical Risk Strategy & Framework

  • Develop and lead the organization's geopolitical and country risk framework.
  • Establish methodologies to assess political, regulatory, economic, and security risks across regions.
  • Integrate geopolitical risk analysis into enterprise risk management and strategic planning.

Global Risk Monitoring & Intelligence

  • Monitor global political developments, conflicts, elections, sanctions, trade policies, and regulatory shifts.
  • Provide real-time intelligence on geopolitical events impacting business operations and investments.
  • Maintain risk dashboards and early warning systems for emerging threats.

Scenario Planning & Forecasting

  • Develop geopolitical scenarios and stress tests to assess potential business impacts.
  • Evaluate risks related to market access, supply chains, currency stability, and regulatory environments.
  • Provide forward-looking assessments for strategic planning and capital allocation decisions.

Strategic Advisory & Decision Support

  • Advise executive leadership and the Board on geopolitical risks and opportunities.
  • Support investment decisions, market entry strategies, and global expansion plans.
  • Provide risk-adjusted recommendations for international operations.

Country & Regional Risk Assessment

  • Evaluate country risk ratings and sector-specific geopolitical exposures.
  • Assess risks related to sanctions, trade restrictions, political instability, and regulatory changes.
  • Guide regional strategy and investment decisions based on risk profiles.

Crisis Management & Response

  • Lead geopolitical risk response during crises such as conflicts, sanctions, or political instability.
  • Coordinate with risk, legal, compliance, security, and operations teams.
  • Develop contingency and business continuity plans for high-risk scenarios.

Stakeholder Engagement & Intelligence Networks

  • Build relationships with government agencies, think tanks, intelligence providers, and global institutions.
  • Collaborate with external advisors and geopolitical analysts.
  • Represent the organization in global risk forums and policy discussions.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with strategy, risk, finance, compliance, legal, and investment teams.
  • Ensure geopolitical risk insights are embedded in decision-making processes.
  • Support global expansion and market entry evaluations.

Reporting & Communication

  • Produce geopolitical risk reports, briefings, and executive summaries.
  • Present insights to senior leadership, investment committees, and the Board.
  • Ensure clarity and timeliness of risk communication during fast-moving events.

Leadership & Capability Building

  • Lead and mentor geopolitical analysts and risk professionals.
  • Build organizational capability in political risk analysis and forecasting.
  • Foster a culture of proactive risk awareness and strategic foresight.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in International Relations, Political Science, Economics, Risk Management, or related field; Master's or advanced degree preferred.
  • 12–15+ years of experience in geopolitical risk analysis, intelligence, international policy, consulting, or global risk management roles.
  • Strong understanding of global political systems, international relations, and macroeconomic risk drivers.
  • Experience advising senior executives or governments on geopolitical risk matters.
