Salary Range: $59,000 - $91,000 depending on experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, repair, and modify precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures from blueprints or sketches.
  • Operate a variety of machine tools including lathes, mills, grinders, and EDM machines.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, specifications, and CAD models to determine tool dimensions and tolerances.
  • Perform precision measurements using instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges to ensure accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with existing tooling, implementing effective repair solutions.
  • Select appropriate materials and apply heat treatments for tool construction and repair.
  • Collaborate with engineers and production teams to optimize tool design and manufacturing processes.

Recommended Qualifications

  • Completion of a formal Tool & Die Maker apprenticeship or 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in operating a wide range of manual and CNC machine tools (lathes, mills, grinders, EDMs).
  • Expert ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Demonstrated skill in precision measurement using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and CMMs.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgy, heat treatment, and various tool steels.
  • Proven problem-solving and troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and repairing tooling.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam)
  • Experience operating or programming CNC machining centers
  • Demonstrated welding or fabrication skills relevant to tool repair/modification
  • Familiarity with advanced metrology equipment, such as CMMs or optical comparators
