Position Overview
The clinic is seeking an experienced Senior Clinical Embryologist to join the team on an initial full-time locum basis for a period of 3–6 months. This is an exceptional opportunity for a skilled embryologist to contribute to a well-established West Midlands fertility clinic.
Following the initial locum period, there is a strong possibility of the role transitioning to a permanent position for the right candidate. The successful individual will be technically proficient across all advanced embryology procedures, committed to regulatory excellence, and able to thrive in a close-knit, patient-focused clinical environment.
Core Responsibilities
Embryology Procedures
- Perform all routine and advanced embryology procedures including oocyte collection and assessment, ICSI, fertilisation checks, embryo culture to blastocyst stage, and embryo selection.
- Carry out vitrification and warming of oocytes and embryos to the highest technical standard, adhering to established protocols.
- Perform frozen embryo transfer (FET) procedures
- Prepare and assess gametes prior to treatment, ensuring quality and suitability at each stage of the laboratory process.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Management
- Ensure full compliance with HFEA licensing requirements, the HFEA Code of Practice, and all relevant legislation governing assisted conception.
- Maintain and contribute to the laboratory quality management system (QMS), including SOPs, risk assessments, and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) processes.
- Support preparation for and participation in HFEA inspections, ensuring ongoing readiness and adherence to licence conditions.
- Uphold the highest standards of consent, witnessing, traceability, and chain of custody for all gametes and embryos.
Records, Data & Audit
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous laboratory records in line with HFEA reporting obligations and clinic policy.
- Contribute to data collection, outcome analysis, and internal audit programmes, including KPI monitoring and benchmarking against national performance data.
- Participate in adverse event reporting and the ongoing review of key performance indicators to drive continuous quality improvement.
Research, Development & Innovation
- Participate in the development, validation, and introduction of new techniques, protocols, and technologies within the laboratory.
- Contribute to the review and updating of standard operating procedures to reflect current evidence and best practice.
- Stay abreast of developments in reproductive science and bring relevant advances to the attention of the clinical team.
Team Collaboration & Patient Care
- Work collaboratively with consultants, nursing staff, and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver seamless, patient-centred care.
- Provide clear and sensitive communication to patients regarding embryology outcomes, supporting them throughout the treatment journey.
- Contribute to the supervision and mentoring of junior laboratory staff, fostering a culture of learning and professional development.
- Actively participate in team meetings, clinical governance activities, and departmental training sessions.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Biological Sciences, Reproductive Science, or a closely related field; Masters or PhD highly desirable.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in a clinical embryology setting, with demonstrable competency in a busy IVF laboratory.
- Demonstrated proficiency in ICSI, vitrification, and embryo culture to blastocyst stage as core competencies.
- Thorough understanding of HFEA regulatory requirements and experience applying the HFEA Code of Practice in day-to-day laboratory operations.
- Experience contributing to quality management systems, audit programmes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist
- Excellent attention to detail, documentation skills, and commitment to accuracy.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage sensitively with patients and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to manage competing priorities in a patient-focused clinical environment.
- Ability to hit the ground running in a locum capacity, with minimal onboarding time required.
