Core Responsibilities
As an Associate Bankruptcy Attorney, you will manage a diverse caseload including Chapter 7, Chapter 11, and Chapter 13 bankruptcy filings for both individual and business clients. Your responsibilities will include preparing bankruptcy petitions, schedules, statements of financial affairs, and supporting documentation with meticulous attention to detail. You will represent clients during initial consultations, explaining bankruptcy options and helping them understand the implications of each filing option.
You will draft motions, pleadings, and legal memoranda addressing issues such as discharge objections, adversary proceedings, and creditor disputes. Your litigation skills will be developed through handling discovery, depositions, and bankruptcy court appearances before judges. You will maintain regular client communication, ensuring they understand case progress and required actions for successful case resolution.
Additionally, you will conduct legal research on bankruptcy law developments, prepare clients for creditor meetings and court hearings, and coordinate with court personnel and opposing counsel. You will stay current with local bankruptcy court procedures and requirements specific to the District of Maryland. Your work will contribute directly to helping individuals achieve fresh financial starts and businesses achieve successful reorganizations.
Must-Have Requirements
Candidates must hold a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school and maintain an active Maryland law license in good standing. Prior bankruptcy law experience is preferred, whether from law firm practice, judicial clerkships, or legal aid organizations. You must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills, as client interactions and court appearances are central to this role.
Essential qualifications include proficiency with legal research platforms, case management software, and Microsoft Office applications. You must possess exceptional analytical abilities to review complex financial documents and identify legal issues affecting case strategy. Attention to detail is critical when preparing bankruptcy filings, as errors can have significant consequences for clients.
Preferred candidates will have litigation experience, familiarity with bankruptcy court procedures, and understanding of debt collection and creditor rights.
