Position Summary

Core Responsibilities
You will represent clients throughout the bankruptcy process, handling document preparation, filing requirements, and court proceedings. Your daily responsibilities include drafting bankruptcy petitions, schedules of assets and liabilities, statements of financial affairs, and other required legal documents with precision and attention to detail. You'll conduct client intake interviews to gather financial information, explain bankruptcy options, and determine appropriate filing strategies tailored to each client's circumstances.
Preparation and presentation of clients before bankruptcy trustees during 341 meetings of creditors represents a significant component of this role. You'll handle creditor negotiations, objections to discharge, and adversary proceedings when necessary. Court appearances in bankruptcy court will be regular, requiring you to argue motions, respond to trustee inquiries, and advocate effectively for client interests.
You will collaborate with paralegals and administrative staff to ensure efficient case management and timely deadline compliance. Client communication is essential, requiring you to provide regular updates, explain complex bankruptcy concepts clearly, and maintain professional relationships throughout the case lifecycle. Additionally, you'll conduct legal research on evolving bankruptcy issues, stay current with statutory changes, and contribute to the firm's knowledge base.
Must-Have Requirements
Active Virginia bar license in good standing is mandatory for this position. You must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Minimum one year of bankruptcy law experience is required, though candidates with two or more years will be strongly preferred. You should demonstrate solid knowledge of federal bankruptcy code provisions and Chapter 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcy procedures.
Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, as you'll draft complex legal documents and represent clients in court. Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail are critical given the document-intensive nature of bankruptcy practice. You must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to empathize with clients often facing difficult financial circumstances. A genuine interest in bankruptcy law and commitment to continuing professional development in this specialty is important.
Proficiency with legal research tools such as Westlaw or LexisNexis is expected. Experience with bankruptcy case management software is advantageous but not required. You should be self-motivated, capable of managing multiple cases simultaneously, and comfortable working in a collaborative team environment.
