About the job Corporate Tax Manager
Corporate Tax Manager
Location: Newport Beach, California (Hybrid)
Salary Range: $138,000 – $172,500 per year
Position Overview
Our client, a national professional services firm, is seeking a Corporate Tax Manager for a hybrid, permanent position based in Newport Beach, California. The role carries responsibility for client relationships, engagement delivery, and the development of the team beneath you.
This is a genuine management appointment rather than a senior preparer role. You will own engagement economics, review quality, and client satisfaction, with the autonomy that comes with that and the support of an established practice.
Key Responsibilities
You will manage corporate tax engagements end to end, including scoping, budgeting, staffing, timeline management, and delivery, taking accountability for both technical quality and engagement profitability.
You will review federal and state corporate income tax returns and ASC 740 tax provisions prepared by seniors and associates, resolving technical issues, documenting significant positions, and ensuring the file supports every conclusion reached.
You will serve as a primary point of contact for client stakeholders, advising on tax planning opportunities, legislative and regulatory changes affecting their position, and the tax implications of transactions and structural decisions.
You will supervise, coach, and develop associates and senior associates, managing performance conversations and workload allocation, and you will contribute to practice development through proposals, client expansion, and technical training within the office.
You will manage risk and quality on your engagements, ensuring consultation occurs on significant or unusual positions, documentation supports every material conclusion, and independence and other professional requirements are satisfied before deliverables are released to the client.
Requirements
A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field and active CPA licensure are required, together with substantial corporate tax experience in public accounting at a level consistent with a manager appointment.
You must have demonstrated review-level command of federal and multistate corporate income tax and ASC 740 tax provision work, and prior experience supervising and developing staff.
Strong client-facing communication, sound commercial judgment on scope and fees, and the ability to manage a portfolio of concurrent engagements are essential. The role follows a hybrid schedule based in Newport Beach, California.
Preferred Qualifications
A Master of Taxation or JD with tax focus is preferred. Experience with privately held and private equity backed corporate clients is highly valued in this office.
Exposure to international tax matters, state and local tax planning, ASC 740 for complex or multinational structures, and transaction advisory work is advantageous, as is familiarity with OneSource, GoSystem, or CorpTax and a track record of business development.
Experience managing engagements through an acquisition, disposal, or restructuring event is highly valued. Candidates with a track record of retaining and developing staff, and who have begun generating new work from existing relationships, will stand out for this appointment.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a permanent, full-time position with a salary range of $138,000 to $172,500 per year, based on experience, credentials, and demonstrated management capability.
You will manage your own portfolio within an established practice, with real ownership of client relationships and a defined path toward senior manager and beyond. The hybrid schedule provides flexibility, and the firm supports continuing professional education and specialization.
This is a contract engagement placed through our recruiting team. We work closely with our contract professionals throughout the assignment, from onboarding and first-week check-ins through to end-of-contract planning, and we actively look for the next opportunity for people who deliver well. Many of our contract placements lead to extensions, repeat assignments, or permanent conversion.
We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. Reasonable accommodations are available during the application and interview process on request. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the engagement.
