Job Description:
The Senior Fire Protection Engineer will lead the design and coordination of multi-discipline projects, overseeing the development of comprehensive fire protection packages, including fire suppression, fire alarm, smoke management, and life safety systems. This role will also involve evaluating new and existing life safety programs, managing the construction administration process, and traveling to client sites as needed. Additionally, the Senior Fire Protection Engineer will play a key role in growing the fire protection engineering team in the Baltimore metropolitan area.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fire Protection System Design: Lead the design, specification, and coordination of fire protection systems, including:
- Wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, deluge, and foam/water fire suppression systems.
- Fire water supply infrastructure (fire water storage tanks, fire pumps, underground/above ground distribution piping, and related components).
- Outdoor fire suppression systems (monitors, spray systems, exposure protection).
- Fire alarm systems (addressable and non-addressable, including voice evacuation, initiation devices, supervision devices, and notification appliances).
- Releasing systems for pre-action, foam/water, and clean agent systems.
- Fire Protection Calculations: Lead and create fire protection calculations, including hydraulic analysis of fire water supply and demand, battery calculations, and voltage drop calculations.
- Life Safety Evaluation: Assess building and life safety requirements, such as:
- Building area and height limitations, fire-resistive assemblies, opening protections, occupancy classifications, hazards, building egress, and active/passive smoke management systems.
- Construction Administration: Manage construction administration by coordinating with field personnel to resolve design-related installation issues. Review contractor shop drawings and calculations, oversee field inspections, and support testing of fire protection systems.
- Client Interaction and Reporting: Prepare and present technical reports and client presentations. Build strong relationships with clients, customers, and contractors, and identify new business opportunities.
- Business Development and Management: Lead sales and marketing efforts, identify key pursuits, and ensure revenue and customer satisfaction goals are met. Manage the development of cost proposals and qualification statements, present project budgets and cost estimates, and track project performance.
- Leadership and QA/QC: Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the department. Ensure adherence to the QA/QC process and all company standards.
- Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university.
- Experience: Minimum of 7 years of related design experience. Completion of a Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering may substitute for one year of experience.
- Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Advanced knowledge of design tools, such as hydraulic calculation software, AutoCAD, Revit, Excel, and Word.
- Capable of solving complex problems requiring adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, or criteria.
- Licensure: Professional Fire Protection Engineer (P.E.) license required.
- Other Requirements:
- Ability to obtain and maintain access authorization to facilities and data of clients, including DOE, DOS, aerospace, military, pharmaceutical, and other industries as necessary.
- Experience working with military standards is strongly preferred.
