Prototyping Engineer (EDV) Volunteer
Associated Supervisor: Chief Deployment Demonstrator Mission (DDM) Engineer
About the Position: In preparation for the first-ever Tumbleweed Deployment Demonstrator Mission (DDM), the first ever mission to show the working principle of our rover in a high altitude drop, an entry-descent vehicle (EDV) has to be developed to house the Tumbleweed rover during its atmospheric descent. As an EDV-prototyping engineer, you will work on the manufacturing of a complicated interface between an aerodynamically determined outer capsule design, and an inner structure fit to house and deploy a compressed Tumbleweed rover. You will collaborate with engineers in the rover department as well as with EDV engineers to iterate complex mechanisms that ensure a robust and effective transportation vehicle. This position requires a hands-on approach, a strong understanding of mechanisms, and a creative and motivated mindset.

Hands-on experience with tools and prototype development and integration
Experience with 3D Printing
Good with structured design approach
Good documentation and reporting skills
Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or higher degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field
Expected commitment of at least 1.5 years and approximately 15 hours per week
Responsibilities:
Collaborate with other EDV engineers to design and iterate an external EDV structure.
Collaborate with rover engineers to design and iterate an internal EDV structure.
Manufacture, assemble and test various EDV parts.
Document results and prototype designs.
