Job Openings Power Conditioning Engineer Volunteer

About the job Power Conditioning Engineer Volunteer

  • Volunteer position

  • Remote Position.

  • Being based in/around Delft or Vienna or able to travel is a plus

About us:

Team Tumbleweed is a new space pioneering team of young scientists and engineers from across the world, with the main goal of disrupting conventional Martian exploration methods, by developing a swarm of foldable, lightweight rovers. Our innovative approach will reduce cost, risks and will provide valuable scientific data from different points in space-time of the Martian surface.

Job description:

We are looking for highly motivated and result orientated Power conditioning engineers on a volunteering base, that will be a part of a dynamic team responsible with designing the Electrical Power System onboard our Tumbleweed Rovers. The job itself comes with technical challenges given the innovative and trailblazing nature of our mission.

Soft skills:

  • Excellent spoken and written English.

  • Good communication abilities and comfortable with working in a diverse and multinational team environment.

  • Solution driven and technical enthusiast

  • Passion for space exploration and innovation

  • Having an intrinsic motivation of solving challenging problems

General task to be performed:

  • The design, development and test of spacecraft power systems of on-board applications. This work encompasses the definition of a centralized power system having overall low power levels, together with their interfaces with respect to solar arrays and batteries, the attendant power distribution/protection equipment and pyrotechnic, unfolding activation functions.

  • The development of simulation blocks for system analysis within its Martian environment (batteries, solar cells, power control and distribution units) useful for the independent evaluation of critical power and energy budgets.

  • Support to laboratory activities concerning design and development or verification of circuits for power management and distribution.

  • Active involvement in critical R&D activities supported by simulation, worst case analysis and laboratory testing of the overall system or of the most critical sub-components.

  • Assisting in the development and validation of worst case simulation blocks for electrical equipment analysis (converters, shunt regulators, current limiters, latching protections, critical telemetry or telecomand functions) that are useful for the independent check of the most critical equipment functionality and performances.

To successfully perform the above mentioned task, the following background/ experience is required:

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering. A Master or PhD degree will be an asset.

  • Familiar with:
    • Digital control of power converters

    • Analog Electronics

    • Power converters topologies

    • The design of power converters with GaN semiconductors.

    • Space power conversion systems (Solar energy generation)

  • Experience in the development of computer models like SPICE based simulators. Python modeling is an asset.

  • Good knowledge with digital and analog electronics and control system theory.

  • Familiar with power conditioning electronics. “Hands-on” knowledge of the circuit design of such systems is an asset.

What we offer:

  • Work in a dynamic, international and collaborative environment.

  • Possibility of publishing technical academic papers and participating in space related conferences.

  • Networking and propelling your career in aerospace engineering with companies like European Space Agency, Airbus, Voestalpine etc.
