Job Openings Medical Billing Specialist (Part-Time Consultant, Remote) - Remote Roles

About the job Medical Billing Specialist (Part-Time Consultant, Remote) - Remote Roles

About the Role

We are building an AI- and agentic-driven platform focused specifically on automating and augmenting workflows in the US medical billing ecosystem. This is an early-stage product, and we are looking to work directly with an experienced medical billing professional who understands the end-to-end medical billing lifecycle (A–Z) and can help translate real-world billing workflows, decisions, and edge cases into clear system logic and documentation.

This is not an execution-only role. You will act as a domain expert and consultant, helping our founding team deeply understand how medical billing actually works in practice—across roles, responsibilities, decision points, and exceptions.

Our founding team is based in North America (Canada), and the platform is being built for the US healthcare market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ability to map the complete medical billing process end-to-end, including:
    • Patient intake and eligibility
    • Coding and charge entry
    • Claims submission
    • Payer interactions
    • Rejections, denials, corrections, and resubmissions
    • Posting payments and AR follow-ups
    • Compliance and audit considerations
  • Break down roles and responsibilities across different types of medical billing specialists and stakeholders involved in the process.
  • Clearly articulate the decisions, judgments, and trade-offs medical billing specialists make in real-world scenarios (e.g., coding choices, payer-specific nuances, denial handling strategies).
  • Help define:
    • Common workflows
    • Edge cases
    • Failure points
    • Exceptions that AI systems must understand and handle
  • Produce clear written documentation, diagrams, and explanations that product, engineering, and AI teams can work from.

Requirements

  • 3–5+ years of hands-on experience as a medical billing specialist or in a closely related medical billing role.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS codes
    • Payer rules and variations
    • US healthcare billing standards and workflows
  • Proven ability to explain complex processes clearly and logically.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders (billing teams, providers, payers, ops, or technology teams).
  • Comfortable using digital tools and collaborating with remote teams.
  • Able to think structurally and systemically—not just operationally.

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience working with:
    • Healthcare software products
    • Automation, AI, or workflow tools
  • Experience advising startups or early-stage products.
  • Comfort reviewing workflows from a systems and logic perspective, not just from execution.

Why This Role

  • Work directly with the founding team on a high-impact, early-stage product.
  • Influence how AI and agentic systems are built in the medical billing space.
  • Flexible, part-time commitment with meaningful ownership and input.
  • Opportunity to shape a platform designed for real-world billing professionals—not theoretical workflows.
