About the job Process Engineer - Cover Glass
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and innovative Process Engineer to lead the development and optimization of cover glass manufacturing processes. In this role, you will focus on glass fabrication technologies - including thermal forming, bending, CNC machining, polishing, coating/printing, and lamination - to support next-generation product development. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to bring cover glass solutions from concept to full-scale production, with a special focus on wearable AI devices and other compact consumer electronics.
Key Responsibilities
Process Development & Optimization: Design, establish, and optimize scalable manufacturing processes for high-precision cover glass, covering glass thermal forming, bending, CNC machining/shaping, chemical/mechanical polishing, screen/pad printing, and coating.
Prototyping to Mass Production: Support NPI engineering builds, driving seamless transitions from engineering samples and trial runs to high-volume manufacturing.
Technical Troubleshooting: Identify root causes of process variations,
cosmetic/structural defects, yield loss, and throughput bottlenecks; implement corrective and preventive actions.
Equipment & Tooling: Define equipment specifications, select vendor equipment, evaluate new tools, and design fixtures for precise processing of ultra-thin, curved, or multi-dimensional glass components.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Work closely with Product Design (PD) and Materials teams to ensure glass cover designs align with process capabilities and yield targets.
Quality & Metrology: Collaborate with SQE to set up incoming material inspection criteria (e.g., OMM, CMM, Keyence, Zygo, optical profilers, stress meters).
Utilize statistical tools (DOE, GRR) to ensure process stability and tight tolerance control.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials
Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related discipline.
Experience: 5+ years of direct hands-on experience in CG/BG (or optical glass/display glass) process development or manufacturing.
Core Technical Expertise:
Thermal Forming/Bending: Proven experience with glass heat treatment,
2.5D/3D thermal shaping, glass strengthening, or glass bending processes.
CNC Machining: Hands-on understanding of precision glass grinding, drilling, cutting, and CNC machining parameters.
Polishing: Expertise in mechanical and chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP), edge polishing, to achieve ultra-smooth surface finishes with precise dimension control.
Coating/Printing and Others: Experience with screen printing, inkjet printing, decorative/functional coating applications, or lamination processes.
Data-Driven Engineering: Strong knowledge of DOE, CPK, FMEA, and track record of root-causing optical, cosmetic, and reliability failures to a verified mechanism and a deployed fix.
Fluent written and spoken Mandarin and English, and a demonstrated ability to operate as the bridge between a China-based supply chain and a US-based design and program team.
Willingness to travel to supplier sites regularly.
Preferred Qualifications
Wearable Electronics Background: Experience in designing or manufacturing glass for wearable devices (e.g. smartwatches, AI devices) where tight tolerances, scratch resistance, and compact form factors are essential.
Quality Systems: Strong familiarity with quality standards (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 13485) and standard inspection techniques for optical/glass materials.
Surface Treatments: General understanding of chemical strengthening (ion exchange), anti-reflective (AR), anti-fingerprint (AF), anti-glare (AG), or anti-scratch coatings.
Vendor Management: Experience interfacing with overseas suppliers, glass foundries, and contract manufacturers (CMs).
Key Competencies
Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.
Excellent cross-functional communication and technical reporting skills.
Ability to manage tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
