We are assisting our client in their search for a skilled, driven and strategic Vice President of Finance and Administration to join their team.

Our client is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and providing resources for mental health support, with an emphasis on mobilizing youth and young adults. With a mission to reduce stigma and encourage open conversations, they are a pivotal force in fostering a supportive mental health community.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the VP of Finance and Administration will oversee all financial processes and lead human resources across the organization. As a key member of the leadership team, the VP will drive innovation, strategic thinking, and execution of Finance and HR priorities, while fostering relationships, providing team leadership, and collaborating cross-functionally with Operations and other departments. This role ensures that the team has the tools and resources needed to achieve their objectives.

This is a unique opportunity for a finance and HR executive with strong leadership and problem-solving skills in a high-growth, mission-driven organization. The VP of Finance and Administration will oversee the Sr. Manager of People & Culture, Staff Accountant, and contracted bookkeeper, while collaborating closely with the Director of Special Projects and Operations and Head of Digital Technology.

The preferred candidate will be located in the Washington, DC metro area and work in a hybrid capacity. However, we are also open to considering remote candidates based within the Eastern or Central time zones.

KEY RESULTS

Financial Management (40%)

  • Lead all accounting and financial reporting for the organization, including overseeing the development of the organizations annual budget and monitoring performance against individual grant and program budgets throughout the fiscal year
  • Facilitate and help manage the accounting monthly close and reporting in a timely manner
  • Report regularly to the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, and Board Treasurer on financial performance; provide regular insight on financial results and best practices
  • Coordinate with division leads to ensure department finances are being tracked effectively and financial resources are being strategically allocated to meet organizational goals
  • Lead the Finance Department, providing supervision and strategic direction to the Staff Accountant and contract Bookkeeper
  • Oversee preparation and maintenance of reports needed for annual audit Provide proactive, creative, cross-functional thinking and ideas to enhance organizational financial oversight
  • Support the organizations process for acceptance of complex gifts and assets
  • Assist the Executive Director and Treasurer of the Board as needed, supporting execution of the organizations investment strategy including overseeing updates to the investment policy statement, relationship with investment managers, and evaluation of investment activity
  • Serve as primary staff liaison to the Board Finance Committee; effectively communicate and present critical financial matters at select Board of Directors and committee meetings
  • Represent the organization externally, as necessary, particularly in banking and lease negotiations
  • Ensure staff accountability to financial procedure via the completion of the Credit Card agreement form.

People and Culture (40%)

  • Provide senior-level leadership and guidance to HR operations, serving as strategic lead for the Sr. Manager of People and Culture, and People and Culture Team. Lead the Sr. Manager of People in Culture in developing and implementing HR plans, policies, and initiatives that align with the companys vision and mission, ensuring compliance with labor laws, promoting equal opportunity and diversity, and examining processes for efficiency.
  • Support the Sr. Manager of People and Culture in overseeing the administration of benefits and payroll, including open enrollment.
  • Support the Senior Manager of People and Culture, Chief Operating Officer, and VP of Equity and Inclusion in labor and employee relations.
  • In partnership with Sr. Manager, People and Culture, develop and implement HR plans, policies, and initiatives that align with the company's vision and mission.
  • Maintain knowledge of employment law, human resources, and talent management regulations; in turn, lead annual review and update of Employee Manual.
  • Oversee talent strategy and hiring with operational support from People and Culture team
  • Monitor key performance indicators and recommend new and improved measures for performance evaluations, and lead semi-regular benefits program review to attract and retain top talent

Operations and Leadership (20%)

  • Supervise the Human Resources and Finance teams (currently 2FTE, 1PT, 1 contractor), ensuring their roles and responsibilities are clear and executed effectively
  • Implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures, working in collaboration with the Director of Operations & Special Projects
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the Executive Director & COO informed of all critical issues necessary for organizational leadership
  • Provide analytical support to the Executive Team, including development of internal management reporting capabilities
  • Develop skills & capabilities and provide growth opportunities for entire Administration and Finance Team
  • Serve as member of the organizations Leadership Team, responsible for operationalizing and assessing the organizations

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or other certification in finance, accounting, or related field; CPA certification and/or MBA preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP and FASB topics as applied to nonprofits; must be familiar with nonprofit finance and accounting regulations
  • HR certification (e.g. PHR/SPHR/SHRM-CP) is a plus
  • High level of financial and analytical skills and extensive knowledge of financial policies, practices, and nonprofit systems
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment, with at least 5 years of managerial experience in leading a team and mentoring staff in a high-growth environment
  • Proven experience in senior HR role
  • Deep knowledge of HR functions (talent management, recruitment, etc.)
  • Proven track record in the areas of planning, financial management and operational oversight
  • Strong interest in and commitment to the mission and goals of the company
  • Must have Quickbooks Desktop experience; ERP and other accounting software experience a plus
  • Experience with Salesforce a plus

COMPENSATION

This position offers an initial salary of $124,000 along with robust benefits. The starting pay for this position is equal to others at the same level throughout the organization. Candidates whose experience meets both the minimum and preferred qualifications may be considered for a starting salary that exceeds the current amount. The role sits within our clients Level 7 salary band, and as such, has the potential to grow to $186,000 over time. FLSA Status: Exempt.
