Job Title: Senior Data Engineer - Application Modernization

Overview: The Senior Data Engineer will play a key role in an enterprise modernization program, supporting the phased transformation of a complex Microsoft Access and SQL Server ecosystem into a modern cloud-based platform. Working closely with product, engineering, and subject matter teams, this role will be responsible for understanding and evolving application data and business logic, designing data migration and integration solutions, and ensuring data integrity as legacy and modern systems operate in parallel throughout the modernization journey.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and implementation of data solutions supporting the phased modernization of an enterprise platform.
  • Analyze and reverse engineer existing SQL Server databases, stored procedures, Microsoft Access applications, and associated business logic.
  • Design, develop, and maintain data integration, synchronization, and migration processes between legacy SQL Server and modern PostgreSQL environments.
  • Ensure the integrity, consistency, quality, and reliability of business-critical data across legacy and modern platforms.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Software Engineering, and business subject matter experts to understand processes and translate requirements into scalable data solutions.
  • Design and implement data models, database structures, and migration strategies that support long-term platform evolution.
  • Identify, document, and help preserve business rules embedded within legacy databases, stored procedures, and application code.
  • Develop scripts, utilities, and automated processes to support data migration, validation, reconciliation, and deployment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex data, integration, and application issues across legacy and modern platforms.
  • Contribute to architecture, design, and technical planning activities aligned with enterprise modernization objectives.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for data models, integrations, migration processes, and operational procedures.
  • Apply security, performance, and data governance best practices throughout the solution lifecycle.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members on data engineering and modernization practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the modernization program.

Qualifications:

  • Strong experience in data engineering, database development, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including database structures, stored procedures, and data migration.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Access databases and applications, including reverse engineering existing systems.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and modern cloud-based data platforms.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, database architecture, ETL/data integration, synchronization, and migration strategies.
  • Ability to reverse engineer complex legacy systems and identify business rules embedded in databases and application logic.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience developing scripts, utilities, and automated data processes.
  • Experience with data validation, reconciliation, quality assurance, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work through complex technical systems.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and business stakeholders.
  • Strong documentation skills and a systematic approach to understanding data and business processes.
  • Experience supporting application modernization, legacy system transformation, or similar enterprise technology initiatives is highly preferred.
