Major Purpose
This position involves performing a variety of tasks within the Materials Engineering Laboratory, ranging from routine to complex analytical assignments. With responsibilities that include preparing and analyzing material samples, operating specialized equipment, and collaborating with cross-functional teams, you'll be a vital part of our mission to deliver high-quality, reliable products.

General Duties

  • Prepare and analyze material samples, components, and processes with limited engineering oversight for moderately complex activities.
  • Operate lab equipment such as abrasive cutoff machines, band saws, surface grinders, belt sanders, mounting presses, and sample polishing machines. (May involve standing up to 4 hours per shift and lifting items up to 35 pounds.)
  • Perform hardness testing, chemical analysis, and microstructure evaluation with accuracy and consistency.
  • Conduct daily verification tests for hardness testers and spectrometers.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement laboratory analytical or process improvements to enhance product quality.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and production teams to troubleshoot equipment and process issues.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on shop and laboratory equipment.
  • Participate in project teams focused on improving safety, quality, cost, and delivery performance.
  • Create and update process instructions and laboratory procedures to meet production needs.
  • Maintain a high standard of organization through 5S principles in the laboratory environment.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of part prints, process instructions, and Deere/industry standards.
  • Basic to moderate knowledge of iron/steel making and heat treatment processes.
  • Expertise in microstructure interpretation and evaluation of steels.
  • Solid mechanical aptitude with a desire to enhance technical skills further.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and engineering software tools.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

Work Experience
The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in metallurgical analysis and heat treatment processes.
  • Previous roles in manufacturing, engineering, or laboratory environments.
  • Participation in continuous improvement or root cause analysis initiatives.

Education

  • A 2-year associate technical degree or equivalent work experience.
