Job Summary
The Chief Estimator will lead our electrical estimating department, overseeing a team of 2-5 estimators. This role is responsible for managing the entire estimating process, ensuring accurate, competitive, and profitable bids for electrical construction projects and change orders. The ideal candidate will combine deep technical knowledge of electrical systems with strong leadership skills to mentor the team, streamline processes, and contribute to the company's growth and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and manage customer relationships with existing and potential customers.
- Make project selection decisions based on management selection criteria.
- Lead and manage a team of 2-5 electrical estimators, including assigning projects, providing guidance, conducting performance reviews, and fostering professional development.
- Oversee the preparation of detailed, accurate cost estimates for electrical projects, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead.
- Review project plans, specifications, blueprints, and addenda to ensure complete scope coverage and identify potential risks or opportunities.
- Perform or supervise quantity take-offs, pricing assemblies, and bid assembly using estimating software (e.g., Accubid)
- Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate quotes from suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Provide pricing support to project managers for change orders on awarded projects.
- Develop and maintain standardized estimating procedures, templates, and databases to improve efficiency and consistency.
- Collaborate with project managers, operations teams, and senior leadership on bid strategies, value engineering, and post-bid reviews.
- Analyze historical data and project outcomes to refine estimating accuracy and support continuous improvement.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client presentations as needed.
- Ensure compliance with electrical codes, industry standards, and company safety protocols in all estimates.
- Track market trends, material costs, and labor rates to maintain competitive bidding.
- Compile and analyze data on bid results to adjust future bidding selection and pricing.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
- Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in electrical estimating for commercial and/or industrial construction projects.
- At least 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role managing estimators.
- Proven track record of successful bids on projects ranging from $1M to multi-million dollar values.
- Strong proficiency in electrical estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.).
- In-depth knowledge of electrical systems (low/medium voltage, power distribution, lighting, controls, etc.), NEC codes, and construction methods.
- Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills for team leadership and client interactions.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple bids simultaneously, and meet tight deadlines.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel occasionally for site visits or meetings.
Preferred Skills
- Expertise in Accubid, TraSer, and LiveCount estimating software.
- Familiarity with BidTracer.
- Familiarity with NECA Manual of Labor Rates or equivalent.
- Change Order Management.
- Familiarity with projects in education, healthcare, government, or data center sectors.
