As an Electrical Project Engineer, you will have opportunities to:

  • Serve as a Technical Specialist or Project Lead, coordinating and providing expertise for assigned substation projects.
  • Support a range of substation projects up to 765kV, including detailed design and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) services.
  • Develop protection and control design deliverables such as protective relay specifications, panel layouts, one-line/single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and relay/equipment wiring for high voltage substations.
  • Create physical design deliverables, including substation yard layouts, grounding systems, lightning protection, control building layouts, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
  • Perform or oversee quality reviews of electrical substation design packages.
  • Offer mentorship and guidance to junior team members.
  • Prepare electrical equipment specifications and bills of materials for procurement and construction.
  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Present proposals, designs, and project-related activities as needed.
  • Travel to client and vendor offices or project sites for design reviews, construction coordination, and field verification as required.
  • Manage design budgets and schedules.
  • Support business development and project pursuit activities.

This position is based at our World Headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas (Kansas City area).

Key Responsibilities

  • Continue expanding knowledge and, when appropriate, provide guidance on design guides, standards, systems, and applicable engineering codes.
  • Offer technical direction to others while ensuring compliance with established quality programs.
  • Produce various engineering deliverables for large or multiple projects and conduct research and recommendations for equipment and material selection.
  • Oversee the collection and management of engineering data. Prepare engineering calculations and manage assigned budgets, schedules, and quality goals.
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques and delegate appropriate tasks to develop team capabilities. Review junior staff deliverables and, where needed, lead production teams or coordinate multidisciplinary activities.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams on moderately complex projects.
  • Help identify key client interests and communicate these to project teams, developing strategies to address client needs.
  • Offer support for business development and other project pursuit activities as needed.
  • Serve as a technical specialist, providing consultation and guidance within a specific practice area. May handle projects independently or support multiple initiatives, solving complex engineering challenges.
  • Facilitate knowledge management, offer mentoring, and participate in professional development, including performance management, learning, and succession planning.
  • Support resource management strategies and may oversee small teams within a single discipline.

Administrative Responsibilities

May be responsible for certain administrative duties such as:

  • Ensuring implementation and communication of policies, procedures, and processes within the team.
  • Ensuring compliance with corporate and divisional programs.
  • Approving timesheets and expense reports.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High voltage substation design experience, including physical and/or protection & controls.
  • Experience as a project lead or technical specialist on utility substation projects.
  • Experience with quality assurance and quality control reviews (QA/QC).
  • Skilled in coordinating with clients, multidisciplinary leads, and project managers.
  • Proficient with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in engineering from a recognized, accredited program or equivalent relevant experience.
  • At least five years of relevant professional experience.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license or other required engineering registration for engineer of record responsibilities.
  • Eligible to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements such as background checks, drug screening, and driving record verification in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Certifications

  • Must hold an active engineering license as required to serve as engineer of record for applicable projects and locations.
