The client is seeking a Lead Substation Protection & Controls Engineer.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to participate and contribute toward complex projects in both a design and project leadership capacity, interfacing with our current and future customers directly to maximize satisfaction and profitability while working on challenging and exciting projects.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Assist in completing assignments and work closely with other engineering & design team members to coordinate multiple projects.
  • Developing electric substation drawings, including single line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, control panel layouts, and control building layouts.
  • Performing substation design calculations and analysis such as ground grid analysis and design, lightning protection, voltage drop, and conduit fill.
  • Performing analysis for protective relaying settings (e.g., short circuit, coordination, and protection) and PT and CT sizing determinations (e.g., CT saturation, PT and CT ratio).
  • Developing relay settings for various protective features with the aid of other departments and external vendor relay application engineers.
  • Working closely with the Civil Engineering department to develop substation foundation and structure drawings.
  • Appropriately assign tasks to staff engineers commensurate with their skill set and assist junior engineers with technical applications of design and analysis, as needed.
  • Developing technical equipment and construction specifications and work scopes.
  • Work closely with peers to ensure accurate and on-time delivery of electrical design that will meet client and industry standards and specifications and meet good engineering practices.
  • Providing on-site technical support for selecting clients during construction and commissioning as required.
  • Seek out, develop, and maintain client relationships, and sufficiently convey the clients expectations and standards.
  • Develop project cost estimates, proposals, schedules, and budgets.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications / Skills

  • Bachelors degree in electrical engineering or related discipline and experience in substation engineering and design.
  • Experience in substation electrical engineering calculations and design.
  • Experience with SEL Acselerator, MicroStation, and AutoCAD.
  • Strong familiarity with NESC, IEEE and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Willingness to enter energized electric substations with proper training and PPE.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 25% of the time. To include travel for project and marketing meetings as well as to clients' construction sites, requiring a valid driver's license, and having access to a car. Most travel is expected to be within driving distance.
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional off hours to support clients and/or meet deadlines (including weekends if necessary).
  • Must be self-driven in time management to meet deadlines and provide accurate deliverables.
  • Must be proficient with typical office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Windows.
