About the job Technical Support Specialist
We are seeking a proactive and dynamic professional to join our team as a SolarAPP+ Technical Support Specialist responsible for reviewing and troubleshooting solar energy designs submitted as applications to the SolarAPP+ automated permitting tool. The successful applicant will communicate with the designer, contractor, or jurisdiction and guide them to helpful resources for future submissions, focusing on exemplary customer service. This role will include coordinating between internal teams, local building officials and contractors to ensure compliance with safety standards, building codes, and permit requirements. This position will directly contribute to streamlining clean energy adoption and construction project reviews nationwide, focusing on safety and code compliance.
In this role, you will:
Collaborate with local building officials, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate and efficient permitting and code compliance.
Analyze and interpret complex construction documents, including plans, blueprints, and specifications, ensuring installer inputs comply with state, federal, and local regulations.
Coordinate technical oversight, ensuring compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), International Residential Code (IRC), and other relevant codes.
Provide mentoring to permit technicians and plan examiners in understanding codes and compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
Code Compliance: Be able to explain why a submitted project may or may not be code-compliant depending on the errors the client receives. Ensure all applications meet relevant product safety standards and building and electrical codes.
Stakeholder Engagement: Coordinate with contractors, developers, engineers, inspectors, and local building officials to gather feedback, and ensure compliance.
Documentation & Reporting: Create comprehensive documentation to streamline workflows and ensure compliance with standards.
Technical Oversight: Provide expert advice on construction plans and energy systems, ensuring all elements meet regulatory and industry standards for safety.
Training & Development: Support submitters by providing guidance on compliance procedures, code interpretation, and best practices.
Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years in energy system design, permit processing, building code compliance, or a related field (experience in clean energy technologies is a plus).
Strong knowledge of local, state, and national building codes, including NEC, IRC, IFC, and other construction standards.
Experience working with local governments, contractors, and engineers.
Skills:
Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders.
Ability to interpret technical drawings and construction documents.
Highly proficient in modern software systems and able to quickly learn new systems - think Google Workspaces, HelpScout, Coda and SolarApp itself.
Nice to Have / Bonus Points:
Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or related field.
PMP Certification, Certified Building Plans Examiner, or other related certifications.
Experience in reviewing construction plans and electrical systems for code compliance.
Experience with SolarAPP+ or similar permitting automation platforms is a plus.
Experience engaging with clients daily focussed on customer service.
Building Code Certification (ICC, NFPA, or equivalent).
Certified Electrical Inspector (CEI) or similar certification.
Salary & Benefits
Salary: $70,000 - $90,000 annually, depending on experience
