Overview

Position at a glance

Amazon Web Services (AWS) focussed DevSecOps specialist to work in a small, agile and inclusive team; assessing technical security, proactively implementing best practice improvements, and providing technical security guidance and leadership to other team members.

Practical experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, Flux, DevSecOps and Agile practices is

strongly preferred.

Support bespoke AWS environments, Kubernetes clusters and data pipelines for scientific

data processing and web service delivery that is scalable, reliable, cost-effective and secure.

12-month contract, with possible extensions.

Statement of Work

Collaborate with other cloud engineers, providing technical advice and assistance to ensure

new solutions pragmatically apply good security practices.

Work under own direction to proactively identify and improve security of existing systems.

Work together with a diverse team of people to develop maintainable and well documented

code and infrastructure-as-code solutions.

Provide technical advice to software engineers, data scientists and executive stakeholders via

meetings & discussions, and channels such as GitHub, email, and formal documentation.

Undertake knowledge sharing and upskilling of team members in DevSecOps best practices.

Join program-wide coordination ceremonies and daily stand ups.

Engage with the open-source community as applicable.

Essential Criteria

1. In-depth understanding, knowledge and demonstrated technical experience maintaining and securing bespoke technical solutions within Amazon Web Services cloud computing platform. Specific emphasis given to secure design, architectural security considerations, security review and uplift. Experience developing and maintaining infrastructure as code solutions (ideally Terraform). Experience developing and managing containerised production workloads with Docker & Kubernetes. Experience with GitOps methodology utilising Flux.

2. Experience in delivering and maintaining operational software. Experience with Linux system administration and relevant scripting languages. Experience with source control management and related processes.

3. Ability to work collaboratively and operate effectively in a small team environment. Willingness to perform work transparently and inclusively (sharing knowledge with and supporting other members of the team). Experience undertaking work under significant and diverse demands on your time. Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

4. Demonstrated understanding and experience with modern software development practices; notably DevSecOps and Agile. Understanding of software architecture patterns and team development tools and practices.

Desirable Criteria

1. Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems and OGC web services. Familiarity with workflow systems such as Apache Airflow. Experience working with Postgresql and PostGIS. Development experience in Python. Experience using distributed computing tools / frameworks like Dask.

2. Previous agile experience as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Experience collaborating with the open source software community.

3. Ability to work effectively across a range of different computing platforms including cloud based (such as AWS) and other high performance computing infrastructure.
