Job Summary

We are seeking a competent and experienced Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Officer to ensure compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations within our manufacturing operations. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years experience in the manufacturing sector, strong knowledge of HSE standards, and a proven track record of implementing safety policies, conducting risk assessments, and promoting a safety-first culture. This role requires excellent leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to engage staff at all levels to foster safe work practices.

Key Responsibilities

1. Compliance & Regulation

  • Ensure adherence to all applicable health, safety, and environmental laws, regulations, and industry standards.

  • Monitor and enforce compliance with internal safety policies and procedures.

2. Risk Assessment & Hazard Management

  • Identify workplace hazards and assess risks across all operations.

  • Develop and implement corrective and preventive safety measures.

3. Policy Development & Implementation

  • Establish, update, and implement HSE policies, safe work procedures, and operational guidelines.

  • Ensure alignment with ISO standards and industry best practices.

4. Training & Safety Awareness

  • Organize regular HSE training, drills, and awareness programs for employees.

  • Provide toolbox talks and orientation for new staff and contractors.

5. Incident & Accident Management

  • Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses.

  • Identify root causes, prepare reports, and recommend corrective actions.

6. Audits & Inspections

  • Conduct regular HSE inspections, audits, and risk assessments.

  • Monitor work areas and equipment to ensure safe operations.

7. Emergency Preparedness

  • Develop and implement emergency response plans.

  • Coordinate drills to ensure readiness for fire, chemical spills, and other emergencies.

8. Safety Culture & Employee Engagement

  • Promote a proactive safety culture across all departments.

  • Act as a role model for safety leadership, encouraging staff compliance.

9. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of incidents, audits, trainings, and HSE compliance.

  • Prepare detailed reports for management and regulatory bodies.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Bachelors degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years as an HSE Officer within the manufacturing or industrial sector (experience in metal/mineral manufacturing is a strong advantage).

  • Certifications: HSE Level 1, 2 & 3; NEBOSH, ISO 45001, or equivalent safety certifications (mandatory).

  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of Nigerian and international HSE standards, regulations, and best practices.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Strong ability to conduct risk assessments and safety audits.

    • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.

  • Core Competencies:

    • Excellent communication and training skills.

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.

    • High attention to detail and sense of responsibility.

    • Ability to influence and drive compliance across teams.
